Chapter 29 - The Shattered Mirror

The remaining escape capsule breached the surface of the Atlantic three miles off the rocky coast of Flores Island.

The morning sun broke through low gray clouds, casting a cold, silver light across the endless expanse of crashing whitecaps.

Arthur helped Maya out of the narrow hatch onto the floating rim of the pod, wrapping an emergency survival blanket around her shoulders.

"The transmission finished," Maya said quietly, her face pale as she looked toward the distant, volcanic cliffs rising from the sea.

"I know," Arthur replied, staring at the black cliffs where a massive radio array stood silhouetted against the morning sky.

"It wasn't just bank accounts, Arthur," Maya said, her hand reaching into her vest to pull out a bloodstained memory card.

Arthur looked at her in surprise. "You pulled this from the cryogenic laboratory?"

"Before she shot me," Maya nodded, wincing as she shifted her weight against the pod's outer casing. "The lineage registry."

Arthur took the tiny plastic chip, his hands shaking slightly as he slotted it into the portable field analyzer on his wrist unit.

The screen illuminated with hundreds of encrypted files, descending through generations of corporate and political dynasties.

At the very top of the hierarchy, marked with the sovereign gold crest of the Vance dynasty, was a photograph Arthur had never seen.

It was not Eleanor Vance, nor was it Julian, nor was it any of the oligarchs who had sat at the boardroom tables in Geneva.

It was a photograph of Arthur as a child, standing beside a man whose face had been systematically scrubbed from all public records.

"Who is that?" Maya asked, leaning closer to inspect the faded digital image.

"My grandfather's first son," Arthur whispered, his voice cracking with a sudden, horrifying realization that made his stomach turn to stone.

"Your father had an older brother?" Maya asked, confused by the cryptic lineage chart scrolling before them.

"No," Arthur said, looking up toward the radio array on the island cliffs above them. "My father *was* the older brother."

He tapped the decrypted file, reading the horrifying birth registry buried beneath thirty years of syndicate state secrets.

"Julian Vance was my biological father," Arthur said, the truth choking the breath from his throat like poison gas.

"Then... Eleanor?" Maya breathed, her eyes widening in sheer, unadulterated horror as she looked at him.

"Eleanor wasn't my mother," Arthur whispered, the words echoing across the empty ocean swells. "She was my father's sister."

The incestuous, Machiavellian horror of the dynasty hit him with the force of an artillery shell, shattering every shred of his identity.

The bride, the bloodlines, the boardroom slaughters—it was all a selective breeding program designed to keep the sovereign wealth within a single, mad bloodline.

A rhythmic hum began vibrating through the air, low at first, then growing into the deafening thrum of heavy rotor blades.

A massive black tactical transport helicopter emerged from behind the sea cliffs, descending rapidly toward their floating escape pod.

The side door slid open, revealing an array of heavy machine guns pointed directly at their exposed positions on the water.

Arthur stood up on the slippery rim of the pod, shielding Maya with his body as the downdraft whipped the sea into blinding white foam.

Through the helicopter's open bay, a woman leaned forward against the safety harness, holding a megaphone to her lips.

It was Victoria, her face unmasked, her reconstructed mouth twisted into a horrific, triumphant grin above the churning waves.

"Did you really think Eleanor was the Sovereign, Arthur?" Victoria’s voice roared over the deafening clatter of the rotors.
