Chapter 16 - The Unholy Inheritance

The heavy vault door swung open with a deafening, mechanical groan that resonated through Arthur’s chest.
Inside, the room was lined with towering server racks and glass display cases filled with gold bullion and encrypted hard drives.
Standing before the central console was Victoria, her hands covered in blood, holding an ancient, leather-bound book.
Beside her stood an elderly man in a motorized wheelchair, his withered hands resting on an ivory-handled cane.
Arthur took a sharp breath, his gun instantly rising to center mass on the frail old man.
"Grandfather?" Arthur whispered, the world tilting beneath his feet once again.
Julian Hawthorne, the founder of the dynasty, looked up with rheumy, venomous eyes and sneered.
"Did you truly believe a simple heart attack could put me in the ground, Arthur?" Julian’s voice cracked like brittle parchment.
"You faked your death five years ago," Arthur said, the sheer scale of the deception paralyzing his senses.
"Julian is the architect of the Iron Synod," Maya said coldly, her weapon trained squarely on the patriarch’s temple.
"Architect? No, my dear," Julian cackled, a wet, rattling sound deep within his ruined lungs. "I am its god."
"Your father was weak," Victoria said, stepping protectively beside the old man's chair. "He developed a conscience."
"He tried to turn state's evidence," Arthur realized, remembering the terrified look in his father's eyes before his arrest.
"David wanted to save you, Arthur," Julian sneered, tapping his cane against the steel floor. "He was willing to sacrifice a century of work for a sniveling boy."
"So you had Victoria manipulate him into that horrific masquerade," Arthur said, piecing together the nightmare. "You wanted us both eliminated."
"David was an embarrassment," Victoria chimed in, opening the ledger to reveal pages written in cryptographic code. "And you were an obstacle."
"Drop the book, Victoria," Maya ordered, stepping forward with lethal intent. "You’re surrounded by federal warrants."
Julian laughed again, a sound so dry and mocking it made Arthur’s skin crawl with fury.
"Look around you, girl," Julian commanded, gesturing to the silent monitors above them. "Who do you think signs the warrants?"
Suddenly, the security screens flickered to life, showing heavily armed private tactical teams securing the perimeter outside the chateau.
"You walked into the lion's mouth, little brother," Victoria said, pulling an ornate ivory-handled revolver from her belt.
"The board of directors has already been liquidated," Julian declared with chilling finality. "The assets are transferred."
"Not while I'm breathing," Arthur said, his voice dropping into a register of icy, unshakable resolve.
"A technicality," Julian whispered, nodding toward Victoria. "One that is easily resolved."

Victoria raised the revolver, leveling the barrel directly between Arthur’s eyes.
"Goodbye, Arthur," she whispered, her finger tightening on the trigger. "The dynasty belongs to the true heir."
