Chapter 11 - The Auction of Sins

The crystal chandelier inside the Geneva auction hall hummed with quiet, electric anticipation.

Billionaires, oil magnates, and European royalty sat shoulder to shoulder, their eyes fixed on the velvet-draped pedestal.

Arthur Hawthorne stood in the private viewing gallery above the floor, his hands resting on the polished brass railing.

Beside him, Maya Thorne scanned the room through tinted aviators, her earpiece glowing with encrypted chatter.

"Three hundred million to start," Maya whispered, leaning closer. "You're giving away an empire's ransom."

"It's dirty money," Arthur replied coldly. "Every carat of that sapphire was bought with innocent lives."

On the stage, the auctioneer tapped his wooden gavel against the podium, silencing the nervous murmurs below.

"Lot 404," the man announced in crisp French accents. "The legendary Hawthorne Star."

The velvet shroud fell away, revealing the midnight-blue gem pulsating under the halogen spotlights.

Bids flew through the air like invisible bullets, escalating from three hundred million to nearly half a billion in seconds.

Arthur watched the numbers climb, feeling the phantom weight of his family’s century-old sins lifting from his chest.

Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the back of the gallery clicked open with a chilling, deliberate softness.

An elderly man in an immaculate white tuxedo stepped forward, holding a silver tray bearing a sealed black envelope.

"Mr. Hawthorne," the courier murmured, bowing slightly as he extended the tray. "This was delivered for your eyes only."

Maya immediately raised her hand, blocking the man's advance while checking for concealed weapons.

"Step back," she ordered, her voice laced with sharp authority.

"It is quite alright, Agent Thorne," the courier said, his wrinkled face betraying no emotion. "The sender insists it cannot wait."

Arthur reached out, taking the wax-sealed parchment from the velvet lining of the silver platter.

The seal was stamped with a serpent coiled around a burning rose—an emblem Arthur had never seen before.

He cracked the wax and unfolded the heavy vellum, his eyes scanning the elegant, handwritten script inside.

*You think selling the stone buys your redemption, boy,* the letter read in crimson ink. *Your mother is still breathing.*

Arthur’s heart slammed against his ribs like a sledgehammer, his vision tunneling into the parchment.

He turned toward the courier, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper. "Who gave this to you?"

The old man simply pointed toward the private mezzanine box directly across the cavernous amphitheater.

Inside the shadowy VIP booth, a woman in an emerald veil raised a champagne flute in Arthur’s direction.

Before Arthur could move, the auctioneer’s voice boomed through the speakers. "Sold for six hundred million to Mezzanine Box Nine!"

The veiled woman stood up, turned her back to the gallery, and vanished into the darkened corridor behind her.
