Chapter 26 - The Vault of the Unborn

The inner airlock door hissed open, not with an invitation, but with four automated sentry turrets dropping from the ceiling tracks.
Arthur grabbed Maya and threw both of their bodies flat against the rubberized floor grates just as high-caliber rounds shredded the airlock walls.
"Crawl!" Arthur shouted, dragging himself forward on his elbows beneath the firing arc of the automated guns.
Maya rolled through the hatchway, drawing her backup pistol and firing two armor-piercing rounds directly into the turrets' optical sensors.
Sparks showered the narrow corridor as the tracking systems went blind, the heavy barrels swinging uselessly toward the ceiling.
Arthur stood up, his boots dripping seawater onto the pristine white flooring of the submarine's command deck.
This was no ordinary military vessel; the walls were lined with banks of cryogenic storage tubes pulsing with pale blue fluid.
Inside each cylindrical tank floated microscopic suspended culture matrices, tagged with names of prominent global dynasties.
"What is this place?" Maya whispered, looking at the labels etched into the frosted glass canisters.
"The Vance genetic archive," Arthur said, his hand trembling as he read the name on the central capsule: *Vance, Arthur – Generation IV*.
A door slid open at the far end of the laboratory corridor, and a man in a white medical coat stepped out with his hands raised.
"Don't shoot," the scientist stammered, his eyes darting toward the security monitors behind him. "I'm only a technician."
Arthur grabbed the man by the collar of his lab coat, slamming him against the reinforced glass of a storage tank.
"What was Eleanor doing here?" Arthur demanded, pressing the cold steel of his barrel under the man's chin.
"The Seventh Drive... it's not just financial codes," the technician gasped, sweat pouring down his pale face. "It's the lineage registry."
"Speak clearly or I'll feed you to the torpedo tubes," Maya snarled, stepping up beside them.
"The Iron Synod didn't just hoard money," the technician blurted out. "They replaced heirs across forty nations over the last fifty years."
Arthur let go of the man's collar, a horrifying vertigo washing over his mind as the scope of the conspiracy expanded into insanity.
"Victoria... the bride," Arthur whispered, remembering the mutilated woman who had started this nightmare at the altar.
"She wasn't a victim of an accident, was she?" Arthur turned slowly back toward the trembling doctor.
"She rejected the genetic protocol," the technician confessed, his eyes wide with terror. "Julian wanted her erased, but Eleanor kept her alive as leverage."
"Where is Eleanor taking this vessel?" Maya asked, cocking her weapon with a sharp, unmistakable click.
"The Azores," the doctor whispered. "The primary server node is buried under an abandoned naval base on Flores Island."
"And the Eighth Ledger?" Arthur asked.
"She’s uploading it right now from the captain's stateroom," the doctor cried out. "Once the transmission finishes, the Synod's shadow network goes completely dark."
Arthur turned toward the blast doors leading to the submarine’s command bridge, his jaw set in stone.
"Maya, stay here and purge these storage tanks," Arthur ordered, checking the remaining rounds in his magazine.
"Arthur, you can't go in there alone," Maya said, grabbing his arm with desperate strength. "She has her personal guard."
Arthur looked at her, his eyes hollowed by decades of orchestrated lies, but burning with lethal clarity.

"She’s my mother, Maya," Arthur said, pulling his arm free. "She's my debt to settle."
