Chapter 12 - The Ghost in the Glass

"Stay with me, Arthur!" Maya barked, sprinting down the carpeted stairs of the auction house.

Arthur didn't slow down, his polished dress shoes skidding against the slick Italian marble floor.

His mind was a hurricane of disbelief, anger, and a sudden, terrifying flicker of desperate hope.

His mother, Eleanor Hawthorne, was supposed to have perished fifteen years ago in a fiery helicopter crash off the coast of Monaco.

He had stood beside her empty casket in the family mausoleum when he was barely twelve years old.

They burst into the private hallway behind Mezzanine Box Nine, their weapons drawn against the dim corridor.

The private viewing room was completely deserted, save for a half-empty glass of vintage Dom Pérignon on the marble table.

Beside the champagne glass sat a silver compact mirror, opened to reveal a dusting of white powder.

"She’s gone," Maya said, clearing the adjoining restroom with practiced, lethal efficiency. "Private service elevator was accessed thirty seconds ago."

Arthur approached the table, his fingers trembling as he looked down at the mirror’s reflective surface.

Written in dark red lipstick across the glass were six coordinates: *46.2044° N, 6.1432° E.*

"Lake Geneva," Maya muttered, peering over his shoulder at the numbers. "The old naval dry docks."

"She knew I was selling the sapphire," Arthur whispered, his jaw clenched tight. "She knew I would be here."

"Or someone wants you out in the cold, isolated from your security team," Maya warned, grabbing his shoulder.

"I buried an empty coffin, Maya," Arthur said, turning to face her with fierce, burning eyes. "I need to know."

Maya sighed, recognizing the dangerous determination burning in his gaze.

"Then we go in hot," she said, chambering a round into her suppressed sidearm. "No backup, no second chances."

Ten minutes later, their black sedan tore through the rain-soaked streets toward the abandoned industrial quarter.

The dry docks loomed out of the fog like the skeletal ribs of a prehistoric beast, rusted and forgotten.

Rain lashed against the windshield as Arthur killed the headlights, plunging the vehicle into total darkness.

"Thermal scan shows one heat signature inside Warehouse Four," Maya reported, tapping her tactical tablet.

Arthur unholstered his own weapon, stepping out into the freezing deluge without a second of hesitation.

They moved like shadows along the corrugated steel walls, slipping through a rusted side door into the gloom.

Inside, the air smelled of brine, rotting timber, and freshly lit incense.

At the center of the cavernous floor sat a single antique armchair under the flickering yellow glow of an industrial work light.

Seated in the chair was a woman wearing an emerald dress, her face concealed beneath an intricate lacquered mask.

"Welcome home, Arthur," a voice purred from behind the mask—a voice that turned Arthur’s blood to ice.
