Chapter 1 - The Heavy Oak Doors

The colossal chandelier suspended above the Harrington estate’s grand foyer cast long, jagged shadows across the freezing expanse of the marble floor, making the sprawling room feel like an elegant cage. Eleanor’s grip on Lily’s fragile, trembling arm was relentless, her fingers digging in like a vice. Eleanor was dressed in a dark, impeccably tailored Victorian gown that rustled with a terrifying, calculated urgency, her silhouette sharp and unforgiving against the opulent surroundings. Lily, barely seven years old and drowning in the stiff collar of her white cotton dress, dug her small, polished heels desperately into the smooth stone. Every sob that racked the little girl's frame seemed to bounce off the high vaulted ceilings, yet the sound earned no pity from the woman dragging her. The air in the house was suffocating, thick with the cloying, heavy scent of Eleanor’s expensive rose perfume and a toxic malice that had been quietly brewing since the very day William had foolishly brought his new bride home. Today, with William supposedly hundreds of miles away securing a railroad contract, Eleanor had finally found the perfect moment to execute her cruel design.
