Chapter 7 - The Interrupted Lie

"William!" Eleanor gasped loudly, her manicured hands fluttering defensively in front of her as she desperately tried to reconstruct her shattered, carefully maintained facade. "William, darling, please, I can explain! It’s a misunderstanding, she was misbehaving, I merely meant to frighten her—" She reached out, a pathetic, last-ditch attempt to manipulate him with her charms as she always had. But William bypassed her entirely, treating her like thin air. He dropped immediately to one knee on the cold stone, ignoring the crease in his trousers, and wrapped his strong, protective arms fiercely around Lily. The little girl completely collapsed into his broad chest, dropping her luggage as her terrified sobs instantly turned into heavy gasps of immense, overwhelming relief. As William pulled her impossibly close, his heavy leather boot accidentally brushed against the hastily packed, overstuffed suitcase. The worn brass latches gave way under the pressure, popping open and spilling a cascade of white cotton garments onto the polished floor.
