Chapter 10 - The Locked Door

As Eleanor practically scrambled out the front doors, fleeing into the howling night with nothing but the clothes on her back and her grand schemes entirely destroyed, a warm, profound, and heavy peace finally settled over the echoing foyer. William hoisted Lily effortlessly into his strong arms, burying his face in her soft hair, whispering fierce promises into the quiet room that she would never, ever be sent away again. They were safe. The evil had been purged from their home. But as he held his precious daughter tight against his chest, William’s dark eyes drifted slowly past her small shoulder, staring down the impossibly long, shadow-drenched corridor that led directly to the forbidden east wing. He slowly opened his right hand, looking down at the heavy, rusted iron key resting ominously in his palm. The immediate monster was gone from their lives, but as he stared at the cold metal, a chilling, suffocating question lingered heavily in the cinematic silence: what unimaginable, monstrous secret had Eleanor locked away in the dark, and what would happen when he finally opened that door?
