Chapter 2 - The Battered Suitcase

In Lily’s free, trembling hand, she desperately clutched the handle of a small, heavily worn leather suitcase. It was a pathetic, battered thing, far too heavy for her slender arms, packed hastily and thoughtlessly by Eleanor’s own uncaring hands just moments before. Inside were merely a few crumpled, unironed dresses, a tattered stuffed bear, and the faint, lingering scent of lavender—the only remaining trace of a gentle mother Lily could barely remember. To the child, the suitcase was her last physical anchor to her home; to Eleanor, it was an eviction notice, a symbol of absolute erasure. Eleanor’s eyes, cold, calculating, and as sharp as shattered glass, remained fixed entirely on the imposing grand entrance. She was a woman driven not by sudden anger, but by a singular, obsessive, and deeply insecure desire: to systematically wipe away every single trace of William's past life. To Eleanor's twisted mind, Lily was nothing more than a lingering stain on the flawless, high-society future she felt she was rightfully owed.
