Chapter 9 - The Safe Haven

William stood up slowly to his full, intimidating height, the heavy iron key held firmly up to the harsh, unforgiving light of the crystal chandelier. "Why was this hidden deeply in my daughter's personal belongings?" he demanded, his voice now a booming, terrifying roar that bounced off the vaulted ceilings and shook the windowpanes. Eleanor could only stare, her mouth opening and closing without sound, completely paralyzed by the exposure of her own catastrophic deceit. "What exactly have you been hiding in this house, Eleanor?!" he bellowed. Without waiting for her to formulate another string of pathetic, desperate lies, William pulled Lily firmly and protectively behind his legs. He pointed a steady, uncompromising finger toward the massive front doors. "Get out. You have exactly one minute to leave this property, and if I ever see your face near my child again, the authorities will be the least of your concerns." The terrifying nightmare was finally over for Lily; her father had decisively chosen her, protecting her fiercely, unconditionally, and permanently.
