Chapter 11 - THE GHOST WHO REFUSED THE SCRIPTFederal agents secured the building before midnight.

Vale escaped.

But his databases did not.

Investigators uncovered years of illegal monitoring.

Soldiers.

Veterans.

Military families.

Children of former operators.

Thousands of people reduced to numbers.

Maya found her own profile.

M7: HIGH RESILIENCE / HIGH DEFIANCE / LOW CONTROL PROBABILITY

Marcus read it.

“Low control probability.”

He smiled.

“That's probably the nicest thing anyone has ever written about you.”

Maya gave him a look.

Then she noticed another file.

M8

No name.

No photograph.

Only one note.

OBSERVATION ACTIVE.

Maya's stomach tightened.

Vale had another subject.

Someone currently being watched.

The investigation traced the file to the training center.

Maya returned immediately.

Twenty-four recruits were currently enrolled.

Any one of them could be M8.

She refused to treat them differently.

That was exactly how Ghost had become corrupted before.

People weren't experiments.

They were people.

Instead Maya changed the entire training philosophy.

Nobody trained alone.

Performance scores included teamwork.

Fast recruits had to help slower ones.

Strong recruits learned restraint.

Quiet recruits were required to lead.

Maya watched personalities change.

Then one afternoon a nineteen-year-old private named Ethan Cole approached.

“My father knew you.”

Maya stopped.

“Name?”

“Benjamin Cole.”

The world tilted.

Sergeant Cole's son stood in front of her.

Maya had known Cole had a child.

She hadn't known the boy had enlisted.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

Ethan shrugged.

“I wanted to know whether you'd treat me differently.”

“Would you want me to?”

“No.”

“Good.”

He turned to leave.

Then Maya noticed a mark beneath his sleeve.

May you like

A small black number.

M8.
