Chapter 14 - THE NIGHT THE SYSTEM COLLAPSEDVale attempted to erase the servers.

Daniel stopped him remotely.

Morrison secured the exits.

Marcus tackled one fleeing contractor.

Ethan helped free his mother.

Thomas stood beside Maya while federal agents arrested Vale.

Vale looked at Maya as cuffs closed around his wrists.

“You think this ends because you caught me?”

“No.”

Maya knew better now.

Secrets rarely ended with one villain.

Hale had hidden behind bureaucracy.

Vale behind science.

Others had hidden behind patriotism.

The problem wasn't simply people.

It was the belief that human beings could be controlled for some supposedly greater purpose.

Vale smiled.

“There will always be another Ghost.”

Maya answered quietly.

“I know.”

His smile faltered.

“That's why I'm changing what the word means.”

The remaining databases were seized.

Thousands of people learned that private information had been collected illegally.

Military investigations expanded.

Congressional committees quietly convened.

Careers ended.

Contracts disappeared.

But Maya cared about something smaller.

Ethan returned to training.

Marcus became an instructor.

Daniel began counseling veterans.

Thomas returned home.

For the first time since Maya was six, her parents ate dinner at the same table.

It was awkward.

Painful.

Beautiful.

Her mother complained about Thomas putting too much salt on everything.

Thomas complained that she still overcooked vegetables.

Maya sat between them listening.

Twenty-four stolen years could not be repaired.

But one evening could still matter.

Then Thomas dropped his fork.

Maya caught him before he hit the floor.

The cancer had accelerated.

The doctor gave him weeks.

Maybe days.

Maya sat beside his hospital bed that night.

Thomas looked at her.

“Don't waste this trying to be brave.”

Maya's eyes filled.

“What should I be?”

“My daughter.”

May you like

So she cried.

And for once, she didn't apologize.
