Chapter 8 - THE WAR AFTER NIGHTFALLEnding Ghost was easier to say than accomplish.

Within seventy-two hours, classified servers began disappearing.

Government contractors shredded records.

Two witnesses vanished.

Someone attempted to destroy evidence connected to Hale.

Nathan's flash drive became the most dangerous object Maya had ever carried.

It contained names.

Orders.

Financial transfers.

Medical records.

Operational authorizations.

Evidence reaching beyond Hale.

Maya was offered protective custody.

She refused.

Thomas told her she was being reckless.

She stared at him.

“You disappeared for twenty-four years.”

He sighed.

“Fair point.”

Morrison assembled a small counterintelligence team.

Maya refused command.

Then everyone began looking at her whenever decisions had to be made.

She realized leadership rarely arrived through appointment.

Sometimes people simply started waiting for you to move.

Daniel helped decode the records.

Marcus stayed beside his brother.

Their relationship was fragile.

Years of resentment didn't disappear because the truth changed.

One night Marcus finally asked,

“Why didn't you trust me?”

Daniel answered,

“Because I loved you more than I trusted the system.”

Marcus looked away.

Maya understood that sentence too well.

Her parents had made the same choice.

Safety instead of honesty.

Love expressed as absence.

The records eventually identified three remaining Ghost cells.

One disappeared before authorities arrived.

One surrendered.

The third had been operating inside military contracting networks for almost fifteen years.

Its director remained unknown.

Then Maya discovered a payment authorization.

The code attached to it was familiar.

NIGHTFALL-15.

Fifteen.

Not fourteen.

Daniel stared at the screen.

“That's my original designation.”

Maya looked at him.

Someone hadn't merely removed Daniel from Ghost 7.

Someone had continued using his identity.

For eighteen months after Nightfall.

The authorization had been active yesterday.

Daniel whispered,

“Someone is still operating as me.”
