Chapter 3 - THE DEAD MAN BEHIND THE GLASSGraduation morning arrived clear and cold.

Families filled the viewing stands.

American flags snapped above the parade ground.

Maya stood in formation wearing a perfect uniform.

Her tattoo was hidden again.

But she no longer felt ashamed of it.

Marcus Caldwell graduated near the top of the class.

Jessica Porter, Luis Diaz, and Samuel Rodriguez joined him.

When Marcus's name was announced, he looked toward Maya.

She gave him one small nod.

It meant more to him than applause.

Minutes after the ceremony, Morrison approached.

“The car is waiting.”

Maya understood.

The past had waited eighteen months.

It could wait no longer.

Several hours later, she descended beneath a government facility outside Washington.

Four checkpoints.

Biometric verification.

No windows.

No identifying signs.

Morrison stopped outside the final door.

“You can still walk away.”

“Could you?”

He said nothing.

The door opened.

Elias Ward sat behind reinforced glass.

Older.

Thinner.

Alive.

Maya entered.

Ward stood.

“Maya.”

“You have ten seconds.”

His face tightened.

“Nightfall wasn't an extraction.”

Maya stopped counting.

“What was it?”

Ward swallowed.

“A cleanup operation.”

He slid an encrypted device across the table.

“Ghost Seven discovered something you were never supposed to see.”

“What?”

“An unauthorized intelligence program.”

“Who ran it?”

Ward looked toward the mirrored glass.

Then he said something Maya hadn't expected.

“Ask Morrison.”

The door opened.

Morrison entered.

Maya turned.

“You knew?”

“I knew pieces.”

“Did you send us?”

“I authorized the original mission.”

Maya's face hardened.

“Fourteen people died.”

“I know.”

Morrison slowly rolled up his sleeve.

Maya stared.

An old tattoo appeared.

Skull.

Crossed rifles.

GHOST 1.

Morrison had been Ghost.

Before she could process it, Ward activated the recording.

Static filled the room.

Then a familiar voice spoke.

“Tell Ramirez if he steals my coffee again, I'm shooting him myself.”

Maya nearly collapsed.

Cole.

Dead eighteen months.

Yet suddenly alive through a speaker.

Ramirez laughed.

Maya covered her mouth.

The recording continued.

Normal conversation.

Equipment checks.

Jokes.

Then chaos.

Morrison's recorded voice shouted:

“Ghost Seven, abort mission. Coordinates compromised.”

Another transmission immediately followed.

“Ghost Seven, continue. Morrison's authority has been revoked.”

Maya looked at Morrison.

“That wasn't you.”

“No.”

Someone had duplicated his command authorization.

Then another voice emerged from the recording.

“Once Ghost Seven is eliminated, Reeves becomes manageable.”

Maya knew that voice.

Colonel Evelyn Hale.

The woman who had supervised her rehabilitation.

The woman Maya trusted.

Maya slowly stood.

“My therapy.”

Morrison nodded.

“She had access.”

“My nightmares?”

“Yes.”

“My memory evaluations?”

“Yes.”

Maya felt physically sick.

Hale hadn't been helping her recover.

She had been measuring what Maya remembered.

Then an alarm screamed through the facility.

Red lights illuminated the corridor.

A security officer entered.

“Unauthorized credentials. Eastern checkpoint.”

Morrison already knew.

“Hale.”

Seconds later, armed security detained Colonel Hale.

But Ward remained terrified.

Because Hale wasn't the secret.

She was merely the first door.

Ward opened another encrypted directory.

One file appeared.

MAYA_REEVES_FINAL

Biometric authorization required.

Maya placed her thumb on the scanner.

The screen opened.

And Sergeant Benjamin Cole appeared.

Alive.

Recorded during the final hours of Nightfall.

He looked directly into the camera.

“Reeves, if you're watching this…”

He smiled weakly.

“…then you were stubborn enough to survive.”

Maya began crying.

May you like

Cole continued.

And what he revealed changed the meaning of every scar Maya carried.
