Chapter 4 - YOU SURVIVED FOR USFourteen members of Ghost 7 appeared in the recording.

Some were wounded.

Some were exhausted.

All understood they might die.

Cole explained that Nightfall had been compromised deliberately.

Ghost 7 wasn't simply caught in an ambush.

Someone wanted the entire team erased.

Then personnel files appeared.

Each member of Ghost 7 had connections to earlier Ghost operators.

Parents.

Mentors.

Former commanders.

Anonymous benefactors.

Finally Maya's file appeared.

MAYA REEVES.

Associated operator:

THOMAS REEVES — GHOST 1.

Maya stared.

“My father?”

Morrison went pale.

Thomas Reeves had supposedly died when Maya was six.

But Morrison knew the man.

Thomas had been his team leader.

The recording continued.

Documents revealed that Hale had transformed the Ghost program into something horrifying.

Psychological profiles.

Stress responses.

Family histories.

Medical markers.

Probability models.

The program attempted to predict which soldiers would survive catastrophic conditions.

Maya's designation appeared.

SUBJECT M7

Projected survival probability:

Highest in cohort.

Maya stepped backward.

“No.”

Suddenly Nightfall looked different.

Fourteen dead.

One survivor.

Had someone expected her to survive?

Had her friends died as variables in someone's experiment?

Then Cole's recorded voice interrupted her thoughts.

“Maya.”

She froze.

“If you survive, you're going to blame yourself.”

Her lips trembled.

“You always do.”

Ramirez laughed weakly.

“She really does.”

Cole smiled.

“We voted.”

Maya whispered,

“Voted?”

“You don't get a vote.”

The others laughed.

Cole explained.

If only one person could escape with the evidence, they had chosen Maya.

Not because her life mattered more.

Because they trusted what she would do with it.

“You'll go home.”

“You'll be angry.”

“You'll fight everyone who tries to bury this.”

Then Cole looked directly into the camera.

“And eventually you'll understand something.”

Maya was openly crying.

“You didn't survive instead of us.”

A distant explosion shook the recording.

Cole smiled.

“You survived for us.”

The video ended.

For eighteen months, Maya had imagined fourteen ghosts asking why she lived.

Now she understood.

They had never been accusing her.

They had been pushing her forward.

Hale was arrested.

The investigation expanded.

But seven months later, when Maya believed Nightfall's final secret had been uncovered, Marcus asked one seemingly innocent question.

“Why did Hale send you back to this installation?”

Maya looked toward Morrison.

The general's expression changed.

Thirty years earlier, the training grounds had been something else.

A classified Ghost assessment site.

Ghost 1 had trained there.

Maya's father had stood on the same ground.

Hale hadn't sent Maya there merely to monitor her.

She wanted the environment to trigger old memories.

Maya stared at Morrison.

“I was six when Dad died.”

Morrison remained silent.

Then he said,

May you like

“Your father didn't die when you were six.”

Maya's entire world stopped.
