Chapter 13 - THE LAST TEST OF GHOST ONEThe abandoned facility looked untouched by time.

Concrete corridors.

Rusting doors.

Old observation rooms.

Maya imagined her father walking them thirty years earlier.

Thomas touched one wall.

“We were idiots.”

Maya looked at him.

“Ghost 1?”

“Very talented idiots.”

She smiled.

Then gunfire echoed.

The smile vanished.

Vale had converted the site into a psychological maze.

Speakers played Nightfall recordings.

Cole screaming.

Ramirez calling Maya's name.

Explosions.

Maya froze.

For eighteen months those sounds had controlled her.

Thomas touched her shoulder.

“Tree climber.”

She looked at him.

“It's a recording.”

Maya breathed.

Then moved.

They found Ethan's mother alive.

Vale wasn't trying to kill her.

He wanted Maya emotionally destabilized.

He wanted data.

Cameras covered every corridor.

Maya looked directly into one.

Then smiled.

“Are you watching?”

Vale's voice answered.

“Always.”

Maya removed her tactical vest.

Dropped her weapon.

Thomas stared.

“What are you doing?”

“Changing the experiment.”

She walked into the central chamber unarmed.

Vale emerged behind reinforced glass.

“You survived Nightfall because of extreme resilience.”

Maya shook her head.

“You still don't understand.”

“Then explain it.”

“I didn't survive alone.”

Vale smiled.

“Sentimental nonsense.”

Then every door around the chamber opened.

Marcus entered.

Daniel.

Morrison.

Ethan.

Maya's mother.

Federal agents.

Former Ghost mentors.

People Vale's model had treated as independent variables had coordinated without his knowledge.

Maya looked through the glass.

“You study individuals.”

She smiled.

May you like

“Ghost was always a network.”

For the first time, Vale looked afraid.
