Chapter 11 - The Letter Samuel Never SentMargaret found another document.

A letter Samuel had written to Thomas but apparently never mailed.

Thomas had somehow kept a copy.

Vanessa read it.

Samuel admitted that he hated needing help.

He hated seeing Margaret leave groceries.

He hated knowing his children understood they were struggling.

But one line broke Vanessa.

I hope my girl never mistakes being helped for being weak.

Vanessa stopped reading.

Her father had feared exactly what eventually happened.

She had spent decades believing poverty was weakness.

And in trying to escape it, she had learned to judge others by rank, influence, money, and proximity to power.

Including Margaret.

Including Ethan.

Including her own father.

Vanessa folded the letter carefully.

"What do I do with this?" she asked.

May you like

Margaret answered:

"Live differently."
