Chapter 19 - Ten Dollars Changed EverythingNear midnight, Margaret returned home.

She removed her shoes.
Thomas's photograph waited on the mantel.
While moving it to dust beneath the frame, Margaret noticed something.
An envelope.
MAGGIE.
Her hands trembled.
Thomas's handwriting.
She opened it.
Maggie,
If Daniel finally found the account, you're probably furious.
Good.
It means you're still you.
Margaret laughed.
Then she continued.
There is one thing he does not know.
The first money in that account wasn't mine.
It wasn't yours.
Sam Stone gave it to me.
Margaret stopped breathing.
Thomas described the night Samuel arrived with ten dollars.
Then came the sentence that changed everything.
He told me, "Give it to the next family."
Margaret sat down.
The foundation had not begun because Margaret helped Samuel.
It began because Samuel refused to allow kindness to stop with him.
Thomas's final lines blurred through her tears.
If you ever meet his little girl again, tell her this.
Her father was never the poor enlisted man at the back of the room.
He was the man who quietly paid for thousands of children he would never meet.
He just started with ten dollars.
Margaret immediately called Vanessa.
It was nearly midnight.
Vanessa answered sleepily.
"Margaret?"
"I found something."
A pause.
"That sentence has become terrifying."
Margaret laughed through her tears.
"Your father started everything."
Silence.
"What?"
"The fund."
Another silence.
"The first ten dollars were his."
Vanessa began crying.
"My father?"
"Yes."
Margaret looked at Thomas's photograph.
"He wasn't the man at the back of the room, Vanessa."
May you like
Her voice broke.
"He built the room."
