Chapter 8 - A Photograph From 1984Margaret continued searching through Thomas's records.

One afternoon she found a photograph dated 1984.
Thomas.
Samuel.
Three other soldiers.
And behind them, a handwritten sign:
FAMILY EMERGENCY FUND.
Margaret frowned.
She had never seen it.
Daniel came over that evening.
"Thomas kept things from me."
Daniel smiled.
"Thomas kept things from everyone."
They searched boxes until midnight.
Finally Daniel found an old bank statement.
The account contained far more money than Margaret remembered.
"Where did this come from?"
Daniel turned the page.
Dozens of tiny deposits.
$5.
$10.
$12.
$20.
Military families had been paying money back into the fund.
Not because they were required.
Because someone had helped them.
Margaret stared at the records.
For decades, she believed she and Thomas had carried everyone.
