Chapter 18 - The Names on the ScreenDaniel walked onto the stage.

Nobody publicly recognized Margaret.
She had forbidden it.
Nobody told Vanessa's story either.
She had requested the same.
Instead, the lights dimmed.
Hundreds of names appeared across the enormous screen.
No ranks.
No donation amounts.
No titles.
Just names.
Thomas.
Evelyn.
Maria.
James.
Rebecca.
Samuel.
Vanessa froze.
SAMUEL.
Her father's name glowed among hundreds of others.
Daniel spoke.
"Some people gave thousands."
A pause.
"Some gave five dollars."
The ballroom became silent.
"Tonight those amounts stand beside each other because dignity does not increase with the size of a contribution."
Vanessa's eyes filled.
Margaret reached beneath the table and squeezed her hand.
Daniel continued.
"The strongest institutions are not built by deciding who deserves the front table."
He looked toward Table 18.
"They are built when people keep making room."
The ballroom rose in applause.
Margaret remained seated.

For once, neither woman needed to be seen.
