Chapter 3 - Groceries Beneath a Porch LightForty years earlier, Margaret Hayes had been thirty-two years old and nearly broke herself.

Thomas Hayes was an Army captain then.

They lived near Fort Bragg with two children, one unreliable station wagon, and a refrigerator that made a terrifying noise every time the compressor started.

Margaret knew what military families hid behind closed doors.

Debt.

Fear.

Loneliness.

Pride.

One February evening, Thomas came home unusually quiet.

"Sam Stone's having trouble."

Margaret looked up.

Samuel served under Thomas.

"What kind?"

"His youngest has pneumonia."

"Insurance?"

"Some expenses aren't covered."

Thomas opened the refrigerator.

"They're running low on food."

Margaret began packing groceries before he finished speaking.

Thomas watched her.

"He won't accept them."

"Then don't ask."

That night they drove to Samuel's apartment.

The windows were dark except for a camping lantern glowing inside.

The electricity had been temporarily disconnected.

Margaret's chest tightened.

She left two grocery bags on the hood of Samuel's car.

Milk.

Bread.

Canned vegetables.

Chicken.

Cereal.

Medicine.

Thomas wrote no note.

They drove away.

The following evening, someone knocked on their door.

Samuel Stone stood outside.

He held ten crumpled dollars.

Thomas stared at him.

"No."

Samuel extended the money.

"I can't pay for everything."

"Then keep it."

"No."

"Sam—"

"I said no."

Margaret appeared behind Thomas.

Samuel looked embarrassed.

Angry.

Grateful.

All at once.

Margaret understood.

Poverty wasn't the deepest wound.

Being treated like someone incapable of giving anything back was worse.

Samuel pushed the ten dollars into Thomas's hand.

"Then give it to the next family."

Thomas became still.

Samuel walked away.

Margaret watched him disappear into the darkness.

That night Thomas placed the ten dollars inside an envelope.

He wrote:

May you like

NEXT FAMILY.

Neither of them understood what had just begun.
