Chapter 1 - The SlapThe late-afternoon Texas sun turned the stone walls of our Dallas mansion gold.

I had come home early because Lila’s school had called. I expected to find my husband, Ryan, waiting inside.
Instead, I found him beside Vanessa’s car.
Her hand rested casually on his chest.
“So this is the business meeting?” I asked.
Ryan didn’t even look ashamed.
“Emily, go inside.”
Vanessa smiled.
“He was going to tell you tonight.”
“Tell me what?”
Ryan stepped between us.
“That I’m done pretending this marriage works.”
My eyes drifted toward the mansion behind him—the house we had bought nine years earlier, the house where our daughter had taken her first steps.
“Our daughter is inside.”
Vanessa laughed softly.
“Apparently she’ll have to get used to weekends.”
Something inside me snapped.
“Stay out of my family.”
Ryan grabbed my arm.
“Don’t speak to her like that.”
“Take your hand off me.”
I pulled away.
His palm struck my face.
The crack seemed louder than the Texas wind.
Vanessa covered her mouth, but I could see the smile she was trying to hide.
Ryan laughed.
“Maybe now you’ll listen.”
Then tires screamed.
A black SUV came through the gates and stopped so violently that Ryan turned.
Two men stepped out.
The older man walked straight toward us.
“Mr. Crawford?” Ryan asked nervously.
Crawford ignored him.
He looked at me.
“Mrs. Bennett?”
Ryan frowned.
“My wife’s name is Carter.”
Crawford slowly turned toward him.
“No. Your wife’s legal name is Emily Bennett.”
The air went still.
Ryan’s face changed.
Crawford opened a folder.
“You should ask your husband why he has been using the name Ryan Carter for eleven years.”
I stared at Ryan.
He had gone completely pale.
Then Crawford pulled out a photograph.
Ryan stood on a Hawaiian beach beside another woman.
Two children stood between them.
The date printed beneath the photograph was three years after our wedding.

It disappeared.
