Chapter 12 - The LetterWhile cleaning the attic, I found an old box.

Inside were my mother's wedding dress.
My father's baseball glove.
Photographs.
And a letter.
Written the day before my parents died.
They warned me about dangerous people.
They told me to trust Crawford.
They told me never to give my heart to someone I didn't truly know.
I cried until my chest hurt.
They had tried to protect me even after they were gone.
That night, I called Crawford.
“Thank you.”
He was silent for a moment.
“Your parents asked me to protect you.”
“You kept your promise.”
He sighed.
“I wish I'd been able to do more.”
I looked toward the hallway.
Lila was asleep.
Safe.
Happy.
May you like
Alive.
Maybe that was enough.
