Chapter 5 - The ChildrenClara told me everything.

Ryan had controlled her money.

He had disappeared for weeks.

He had lied about working on oil rigs.

He had taken nearly two million dollars from her.

While we talked, the children played with Lila.

Within minutes, all three were laughing.

It broke my heart.

Their father had created the disaster.

But the children didn't have to inherit it.

Jake eventually found me on the porch.

“I knew something was wrong,” he whispered.

Then he started crying.

“I thought everyone at school was lying when they said my dad was dead.”

I put my arm around him.

“You didn't lie.”

He looked at me.

“You hate him?”

“Yes.”

He nodded.

“Me too.”

Clara had nowhere to go.

Ryan had emptied her accounts.

So I made a decision.

“Stay here.”

She stared at me.

“There are five bedrooms.”

Her eyes filled.

“You don't have to do that.”

“Yes,” I said. “I do.”

That night, three children slept beneath the same roof.

Three victims.

One broken family.

And for the first time, I understood that revenge wasn't enough.

We had to survive.

Together.
