Chapter 39 - The Reckoning at Walter Reed

At 0400 hours, the Black Hawk touched down on the reinforced rooftop helipad of Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.
The scene awaiting them was unprecedented in modern American history.
Lining both sides of the tarmac were three hundred active-duty soldiers, Marines, and Navy SEALs in full dress uniform. At the head of the formation stood General Morrison, flanked by the Director of the FBI and the Attorney General of the United States.
As the rotors spun down and the cabin doors slid open, a sharp, thunderous command echoed across the roof:
"ATTEN-SHUN!"
Three hundred decorated service members snapped to attention in perfect unison.
The medical corps swarmed the litter, carefully wheeling Ethan onto the ramp. Maya refused to leave his side, holding his hand as the gurney rolled toward the trauma entrance, Ethan’s eyes never leaving his daughter. Aunt Evelyn followed, flanked by federal protective agents.
Then, Captain Claire Walker stepped off the skid.
Her service uniform was in tatters, stained with black carbon, hydraulic fluid, and the blood of her enemies. She carried her service rifle slung across her chest, the Obsidian hard drive clutched in her left hand.
General Morrison stepped forward. His face was carved from granite, but his eyes were shining with undisguised reverence.
He stopped three paces from Claire, snapped his heels together, and brought his hand to his brow in a crisp, trembling salute.
"Captain Walker," General Morrison boomed, his voice carrying across the silent tarmac. "The Department of Defense formally revokes all charges of treason, insubordination, and domestic terrorism against you and your team. Your brother's name has been cleared. The President has just signed the executive warrant for the arrest of forty-two co-conspirators named in the Obsidian ledger."
General Morrison lowered his salute and extended his hand.
"You brought our boy home, Claire. You completed the mission."
Claire looked at the General, then looked down at the hard drive in her hand. She placed the drive firmly into Morrison’s open palm.
"Don't thank me, General," Claire said, her voice cold and steady. "Make sure none of them ever see daylight again. If the courts fail... the One-Eighty-Seven will return."
Morrison nodded grimly. "Understood, Captain."
Claire turned, walking slowly toward the hospital doors to be with Ethan and Maya. For the first time in five days, she allowed her shoulders to drop. The war was over. The family was whole.

Or so she believed.
