Chapter 48 - Iron and Ice

The interior corridors of the *Leviathan* were an industrial nightmare of humming conduits, cold neon lighting, and high-pressure steam pipes.
Sirens immediately began wailing throughout the ship—a deep, rhythmic Klaxon that pulsed in crimson emergency lighting along the metal bulkheads: *INTRUDER ALERT. DECK THREE BREACHED. LETHAL FORCE AUTHORIZED.*
Claire and Jax moved through the corridors with brutal, unrelenting momentum.
Every corner was met with suppressed gunfire. Contractors poured out of crew quarters and auxiliary stations, armed with automatic shotguns and carbines, but they were running into a meat grinder. Claire didn't advance like a human being; she moved like a calculating war-machine, chaining target transitions with terrifying speed.
Double tap to the chest, single round to the brain. Over and over.
The iron decks quickly became slick with crimson slush as the squad cleared path after path down toward the laboratory complex.
At the entrance to Sub-Level Two, a reinforced titanium vault door barred their path.
"It's biometrically locked," Jax said, pulling out a decryption tap. "Claire, this will take ten minutes to crack!"
Claire stepped up, slinging her rifle over her shoulder. She unclipped a heavy thermite breaching spear from her harness, shoved it directly into the lock mechanism's hydraulic control housing, and pulled the pin.
A blinding white flare of three-thousand-degree chemical fire melted the lock into liquid slag within four seconds. Claire kicked the smoldering door inward.
Inside, the room was not a command bunker.
It was a laboratory.
Rows of cryogenic storage tubes lined the walls, filled with biological samples, neural-mapping drives, and medical logs labeled: *OPERATION OBSIDIAN: ASSET 0-4 (ETHAN WALKER).*
Claire walked slowly to the central terminal, her hand trembling as she tapped the interface.
The screen opened to a video recording dated four years ago.
On the screen was Ethan. Strapped to a steel medical table, his face emaciated, his veins bulging with dark chemical compounds, but his jaw clamped shut in defiant agony.
Standing over him, wearing a white surgical coat over an unmarked military dress uniform, was a man speaking in a calm, aristocratic drawl:
*"Give us the biometric encryption keys to your sister’s deployment archives, Sergeant Walker. Give her up, and the pain stops."*
On the video, Ethan spat blood directly into the man’s face. *"My sister... is coming for you. And when she does... God won't be able to pull her hands off your throat."*
Claire’s breath hitched in her throat. Her knuckles turned dead white around the grip of her rifle.
"Jax," Claire whispered, her voice dangerously calm. "Who is the man in the coat?"
Jax tapped the terminal, cross-referencing the facial structure with the Pentagon’s classified veteran database.
A red warning flashed on screen: *FILE RESTRICTED. STATUS: DECEASED (KIA AFGHANISTAN 2017).*

"Claire..." Jax breathed, his voice hollow with shock. "That's not Julian Vance. That's General Sterling Shaw. The man who ordered your squad into the valley seven years ago. He didn't die in the ambush. He faked his death and built this entire shadow network!"
