Chapter 82 - The Devil’s Checkpoint

The first round from Claire’s .45 caught the lead point-man directly through the eye-slit of his ballistic visor before he could complete his tactical callout. The mercenary dropped like a severed marionette, the suppressor on Claire’s weapon reducing the muzzle blast to a hollow *thump* drowned out by the cemetery wind.

Without pausing, Claire shifted her point of aim three inches to the right, double-tapping the second operator through the exposed throat junction between his Kevlar collar and plate carrier. Blood sprayed across the weeping willow behind him, and the remaining four commandos immediately scrambled for hard cover behind a row of Civil War-era obelisks, laying down a disciplined, suppressive hail of sub-caliber fire.

Pebbles and pulverized stone rained over Claire and Julian. Julian curled into a tight ball, his hands clutching his ears, trembling uncontrollably as the high-velocity rounds chewed through the concrete above their heads.

"Julian! Grab his sidearm!" Claire shouted over the hammering impact of armor-piercing bullets. She pointed at the first downed mercenary, whose body lay sprawled six feet from the crypt entrance.

"I can't! Claire, they’re going to kill us!"

Claire grabbed Julian by the front of his jacket, pulling him so close their foreheads nearly touched. Her eyes were terrifying in their absolute lack of fear. "You spent ten years orchestrating high-stakes political blackmail in air-conditioned boardrooms, Julian. You wanted power? This is where it comes from. It comes from lead and iron. Now crawl out there and get that weapon, or I swear to God I will leave you here to face our father alone."

Something snapped inside Julian’s shattered psyche. The gilded heir of the Montgomery fortune, stripped of his suits, his arrogance, and his mother's sheltering shadow, saw the cold, unyielding reality of his sister's world. Gritting his teeth, he dropped to his stomach, slithered across the slush, and wrenched the customized SIG Sauer from the dead commando’s holster, dragging himself back behind the crypt just as a burst of automatic fire ripped the dead man’s vest to shreds.

"Good," Claire muttered, slapping a fresh magazine into her own weapon. "Now flank right around the mausoleum on three. Don't aim for center mass—they're running Level IV ceramic plates. Throat, groin, or eye sockets."

"One... two... three!"

Julian lunged to the right corner, firing blindly into the mist, while Claire vaulted around the left. Her maneuver was breathtakingly precise. She dropped into a baseball slide along the muddy grass, slipping under the mercenary’s elevated field of fire, and drove two rounds upward beneath his chin. The man collapsed backward. The remaining two Cerberus operators hesitated—a split-second tactical error against the most lethal black-tier operator the United States had ever produced.

Claire closed the distance with predatory speed. She knocked the barrel of the fifth commando's rifle aside with her left forearm, drew a five-inch titanium combat blade from her chest rig with her right, and drove the steel through the gap beneath his armpit, severing the brachial artery.

The final operator raised his weapon directly at Claire's chest, but before he could pull the trigger, three jagged, erratic gunshots echoed through the cemetery. The commando stumbled, a bullet having grazed his shoulder and another penetrating his hip. Julian stood twenty feet away, hands locked on the SIG, teeth bared in primal fury, emptying the magazine until the slide locked back.

Claire stepped forward, placed the barrel of her .45 against the fallen operator's forehead, and squeezed the trigger once. Silence reclaimed the cemetery.

"Julian," Claire breathed, inspecting the fresh bodies with clinical detachment. She knelt beside the team leader, reached into his tactical vest, and pulled out an encrypted satellite uplink terminal and a set of keys to the armored SUV idling at the cemetery gates.

On the screen of the terminal was an active transponder tracking an international flight route. The destination code flashed in amber: *SVO – Sheremetyevo, Moscow.*

"They weren't sent to kill us," Claire said, looking up, her face splattered with mud and sleet.

Julian lowered his smoking weapon, his hands shaking so hard the steel rattled. "What do you mean? They almost blew my head off!"

"Look at their kit," Claire replied, tossing the terminal to him. "Non-lethal extraction restraints in the rear pouches. Standard military tranquilizers in the side carriers. Arthur wanted to test if I was sharp enough to kill his elite guard, and if you were desperate enough to pull a trigger."

She stood up, wiping the rain from her forehead. "We passed. Now we go to Moscow and take the bastard's head."
