Chapter 49 - The Face Behind the Shadow

The command bridge of the *Leviathan* sat atop the vessel's massive island structure, overlooking the churning black waves of the North Atlantic.
The heavy armored doors of the bridge exploded outward in a violent shower of sparks and metal shards.
Claire stepped through the smoke alone.
Her uniform was shredded, soaked in sea spray and enemy blood, her MCX Spear empty and discarded. She held only a heavy .45-caliber tactical pistol in her right hand, her combat knife sheathed at her chest.
The bridge crew—ten civilian tech contractors and private security guards—threw their hands in the air immediately, cowering beneath the consoles.
At the forward panoramic window, staring out into the raging Arctic blizzard with a tumbler of twenty-year-old scotch in his hand, stood General Sterling Shaw.
He was in his late fifties, his silver hair neatly combed back, wearing the uniform of a United States Army General—completely devoid of unit patches, bearing only the silver stars of his rank.
"I told Vance you would come," Shaw said smoothly, not even turning around. "Julian was weak. He thought money could satisfy a ghost like you. But I knew better, Claire. You were always my finest creation."
Claire raised her pistol, locking the front sight directly onto the back of Shaw’s head.
"Turn around, Shaw," Claire commanded. "Look me in the eye when I take your soul."
Shaw slowly turned, a patronizing, arrogant smile playing across his lips. He took a sip of his scotch and set the glass gently onto the navigation console.
"Take my soul?" Shaw chuckled softly. "Claire, my dear girl... you don't even know what you're standing on. You think this ship is just an offshore headquarters? You think Operation Obsidian was about selling secrets?"
"You used my brother as a test subject for autonomous targeting protocols," Claire said through gritted teeth, her finger tightening on the trigger. "You slaughtered two hundred and forty men in Helmand to bury the truth."
"Those two hundred and forty men were an acceptable operational loss!" Shaw snapped, his voice suddenly rising with fanatical intensity. "The next generation of warfare isn't fought by politicians or scared teenagers in the mud! It’s fought by algorithmic swarms! By autonomous carrier fleets like this one, answering only to those with the vision to use them! Ethan’s brain chemistry... his incredible neural resistance to shock... provided the baseline code for our autonomous strike network!"
"He broke your machines, Shaw," Claire said, taking two slow, deliberate steps forward. "He never gave you my codes."
"No," Shaw murmured, his smile returning, colder and far more terrifying than before. "He didn't give me the codes. But you did."
Claire’s eyes narrowed. "What are you talking about?"
May you like
"Why do you think I sent the clean-up team to the cathedral?" Shaw sneered, pointing out toward the forward flight deck. "I didn't care about killing Ethan. I needed you to track us down. I needed the One-Eighty-Seven aboard this ship. Your biometric field signature—the encrypted transponder in your wrist communicator—was the final sequence needed to unlock the *Leviathan’s* primary launch battery."
