Chapter 89 - The Fall of the Titan

Before Claire could pull the trigger, the reinforced blast door on the opposite side of the command sanctuary hissed open with hydraulic fury.

A massive, armored figure stepped into the room—Colonel Vance, Arthur’s personal chief of security, carrying a heavy rotary assault shotgun. Vance fired without warning, the heavy tungsten buckshot shredding the mahogany credenza into splinters.

Claire reacted with inhuman speed, diving behind a reinforced steel support pillar as the concussive blasts pulverized the concrete where she had stood a fraction of a second before.

"Kill her!" Arthur ordered, his voice cold, devoid of any lingering sentimentality as he retreated toward an armored escape elevator at the back of the sanctuary. "She’s obsolete!"

Vance advanced, firing relentlessly, pinning Claire behind the pillar. Concrete dust filled the air, blinding and choking. "You should have stayed in the cemetery, Commander!" Vance roared, racking the slide of the combat shotgun. "You’re out of your league down here!"

Claire reached into her vest, pulled her last fragmentation grenade, bit the pin out with her teeth, and hurled it not at Vance, but at the ceiling-mounted sodium lighting grid directly above him.

*BOOM.*

The blast detonated the heavy transformer, showering Vance in a shower of sparks, shattered industrial glass, and severed high-voltage cables. Vance flinched, instinctively shielding his eyes with his forearm.

It was the only opening Claire needed.

She stepped out from behind the pillar, discarded her empty rifle, and drew her combat blade. She closed the ten-foot gap in two blinding strides. Vance swung the shotgun barrel toward her, but Claire dropped low, sliding across the blood-slicked marble, and drove the blade directly into his kneecap.

Vance screamed in agony, collapsing to one knee. Before he could recover, Claire lunged upward, wrapping her arm around his neck in a modified guillotine choke, using her body weight to snap his head violently to the side. A sickening *crack* echoed through the chamber, and the massive colonel went limp, crashing heavily to the floor.

Claire didn't pause to breathe. She picked up Vance’s dropped sidearm, turned toward the elevator, and sprinted through the closing hydraulic doors just as they locked.

The elevator climbed at sickening speed, rising five hundred feet through the solid granite core of the mountain toward the exposed mountain summit.

When the doors opened, Claire stepped out into a howling, sub-zero blizzard.

The summit of Mount Yamantau was a frozen wasteland of razor-sharp jagged rocks, whip-saw winds, and driving snow. Fifty yards ahead, idling on a windswept helipad perched on the edge of a five-thousand-foot vertical abyss, sat an advanced tilt-rotor stealth aircraft, its twin rotors beating the freezing air into a blinding vortex of white.

Arthur Montgomery was standing on the boarding ramp, his trench coat billowing violently in the gale, looking back toward the elevator.

Claire raised her weapon, steadying her trembling hands against the raging storm. "It's over, Arthur!"

Arthur looked at her through the driving snow, his face an unreadable mask. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a heavy, red-illuminated master control transmitter.

"It’s never over, Claire," Arthur shouted over the deafening roar of the rotors. "You think you won because you reached me? Look down at the valley!"
