Chapter 79 - Into the Dragon's Den

The descent into the sub-levels of the Montgomery estate was a journey into the twisted soul of the family empire.

The opulent wood paneling and gilded mirrors of the upper floors gave way to cold, unpainted blast-resistant concrete, reinforced with steel rebar and hydraulic bulkheads. This was not a storm shelter; it was a military command post designed to survive a direct nuclear strike.

Emergency klaxons wailed in the low-ceilinged corridors, spinning amber lights casting long, distorted shadows against the walls.

*“WARNING: TARTARUS PROTOCOL ARMED. DISPERSION SEQUENCE IN FOUR MINUTES. VENTILATION VALVES SEALED.”*

Claire moved through the bunker with lethal purpose. Her boots made no sound against the steel grating. Every breath sent a sharp, stabbing pain through her cracked ribs, but her adrenaline was a chemical shield that locked the pain away.

She passed the central communications room. Screens flickered with global news broadcasts: federal agents were currently raiding the Montgomery corporate headquarters in New York; Margaret’s offshore shell companies had been completely frozen by international tribunals; the world was waking up to the truth.

Margaret had nowhere left to run. This bunker was not an escape hatch; it was her tomb, and she was determined to make it the tomb of thousands more.

At the end of the corridor stood the blast doors to the chemical repository.

The heavy vault door was cracked open by six inches, an override cable snaking through the opening.

Claire slid through the gap, carbine raised at eye level.

The repository was massive—a cavernous vault chilled to sub-zero temperatures. In the center of the room sat four massive cylindrical tanks made of reinforced glass and titanium, glowing with a sickly, fluorescent green luminescence. Inside swirled thirty metric tons of aerosolized binary nerve agent.

At the main terminal beneath the tanks stood Margaret Montgomery.

Her expensive silk dress was torn and smeared with grease. Her hair, usually coiffed in immaculate perfection, hung wild and matted around her gaunt face. She was furiously typing commands into the ballistic console, a heavy red master key already inserted into the ignition slot.

"Step away from the console, Margaret," Claire’s voice cut through the hum of the cooling fans.

Margaret stiffened. She slowly turned around.

In her right hand, she held the remote detonation dead-man’s switch. Her thumb rested directly on the crimson trigger.

"You really are your father's daughter," Margaret laughed, a raspy, deranged sound that rattled off the concrete walls. "Tenacious. Merciless. Incapable of understanding the broader picture."

"The picture where you murder innocent people to save yourself from public disgrace?" Claire asked, taking slow, deliberate steps toward her, keeping the carbine trained on Margaret’s heart. "That's not power, Margaret. That's cowardice."

"This family owned presidents, Claire!" Margaret screamed, her voice bouncing violently in the vault. "We decided who went to war and who made the weapons! We were gods! And you... you miserable little ingrate... you burned it all down for what? For some pathetic medals? For honor?!"

"I did it for the truth," Claire said cold as ice. "And for Julian."

Margaret sneered, her finger tightening on the trigger. "Julian was an investment that failed. Just like you. And if I am going to be dragged through the mud, if the Montgomery name is going to die... then I am taking this entire pathetic city with me!"

"You won't press it," Claire challenged, closing the distance to ten yards.

"Try me, Operator 187!" Margaret shrieked, raising her thumb.

Claire didn't shoot Margaret’s chest. She didn't shoot her head.

*Crack!*

A single round tore through Margaret’s right wrist, cleanly severing the tendons and smashing the carpal bones. The dead-man’s switch tumbled from her useless, bloody fingers, clattering against the steel floorboards.

Margaret collapsed, clutching her shattered wrist, howling in agonizing disbelief.

Claire kicked the detonator across the floor, then swiftly input the emergency purge code Vance had extracted from the Boreas database: *0-1-8-7-MONTGOMERY.*

The consoles flashed green. The high-pitched siren ceased, replaced by the mechanical hum of neutralization valves flooding the chemical tanks with neutralizing foam.

*“TARTARUS PROTOCOL ABORTED. CHEMICAL CONTAINMENT STABILIZED.”*

Silence fell over the vault.

Claire looked down at the woman who had brought her into the world—the woman who had spent Claire's entire life trying to break her soul.

Margaret was weeping, rocking on the floor, cradling her bleeding arm. "Kill me..." she sobbed, looking up with venomous, defeated eyes. "Kill me, Claire. End it. Be the monster I made you."

Claire lowered her rifle.

"No," Claire said quietly, looking down at her with nothing left but absolute pity. "You're going to live, Margaret. You're going to sit in a courtroom while Julian and I testify. You're going to hear every single crime read aloud to the world. And every time you look in the mirror, you'll know that the daughter you called your greatest shame... is the one who took everything away from you."

Claire turned her back on her mother and walked toward the exit.

May you like

Behind her, Margaret’s wild sobs echoed into the empty concrete tomb.
