Chapter 53 - The Scent of Blood in Langley

The rain in Washington D.C. fell in heavy, gray sheets, drowning the marble monuments of the capital in an oppressive mist.

In an underground safe house five miles south of the Pentagon, Margaret Sterling sat shivering on a metal folding chair. Her designer pearl necklace was gone; her silk blazer was stained with soot from the blast that had shattered her downtown estate thirty-six hours ago. Two armed marshals stood by the reinforced steel door, their faces carved of stone.

The heavy steel bolt retracted with a deafening clack.

The door swung open, and General Vance stepped into the dimly lit room. Beside him was a scarred, broad-shouldered man wearing a soaked trench coat over a tactical plate carrier—Marcus, his face splattered with mud and engine grease.

Margaret looked up, her aristocratic arrogance frayed to raw threads. “Where is my protection detail? I demand to speak with the Director! I have congressional immunity under the National Security Act!”

Vance walked up to her, his eyes cold and hollow. He didn't offer a chair. He tossed a thick, blood-stained manila folder onto the metal table between them.

“Your congressional immunity was revoked thirty minutes ago by executive order,” Vance said quietly.

Margaret swallowed hard, her manicured fingers trembling as she looked at the folder. “What is this?”

“That is the manifest of Flight NV-88,” Marcus snarled, taking a step forward, his fists clenching so hard the leather of his tactical gloves creaked. “The private Gulfstream that took off from Richmond forty minutes ago. The plane carrying your six-year-old granddaughter.”

Margaret froze. The color drained completely from her face. “Maya…? No… they promised she wouldn't be touched. They told me she was just being relocated for her safety!”

Marcus leaned down until his face was inches from hers. The pure disgust radiating from him made the elderly socialite shrink back in terror. “You stupid, arrogant monster. Did you really think the monsters you fed millions of dollars to for fifteen years cared about your family? You gave them the security codes to Ethan’s sanctuary! You signed your granddaughter’s death warrant just to keep your foundation’s offshore bank accounts from being seized!”

“I didn't know!” Margaret shrieked, tears finally cutting through her caked-on foundation. “They said Claire was out of control! They said Claire was going to ruin the Sterling name—that she was going to drag her brother’s memory through the mud! I was trying to protect William’s legacy!”

“William died because of you!” Vance’s voice cracked like a whip in the confined bunker. “We declassified the radio transcripts from the Korengal Valley this morning, Margaret. Your son didn't die in an unavoidable ambush. He died because you pressured the Department of Defense to award the supply-convoy contract to a front company owned by Shaw and his syndicate. They provided expired tourniquets, jammed rifles, and unarmored Humvees! Claire held her brother in her arms while he bled out through a cheap, defective combat dressing your company manufactured!”

Margaret’s eyes widened in sheer, paralyzing horror. Her hands flew to her mouth. “No… no, William… that’s a lie…”

“Claire knew,” Marcus said, his voice dropping to a deadly whisper. “She found the serial numbers on the defective equipment seven years ago. She could have put you in a federal penitentiary then, Margaret. But do you know what she did? She took the blame. She let you call her a disgrace. She let you humiliate her in front of every general and senator in high society. She joined the blackest unit in JSOC and took every suicide mission on earth just to keep the investigators from executing her own mother for treason!”

Margaret looked between the two men, her chest heaving as if she were suffocating. The reality of what she had done crashed down upon her like a collapsing mountain.

She had called her daughter a coward. She had called her the greatest shame of her life.

And all along, Claire had been walking through the fires of hell to shield her mother from the hangman’s noose.

“Where…” Margaret choked out, her voice barely a rasp. “Where is Claire now?”

The bunker’s primary lights flickered. The radio on the desk hissed with sudden, overwhelming static.

“She’s already here,” Marcus said, looking up toward the ceiling. “And heaven help anyone who stands between her and that little girl.”
