Chapter 96 - The Sovereign of Shadows

Claire climbed the spiral staircase to the executive salon. The air was thin, cold, and smelled of copper and cordite. As she reached the top deck, she found Arthur Montgomery kneeling on the carpeted floor, clutching his bleeding shoulder, hyperventilating as the cabin altitude alarms continued to wail.

Behind the forward console, Margaret stood tall, completely unbothered by the whistling wind coming from the breached lower deck. The gun that had killed her pilot rested casually on the mahogany briefing table. Next to it was the silver briefcase, its screen displaying a countdown: *03:12 UNTIL POLAR SUBMARINE FLEET CIPHER BROADCAST.*

"Look at you," Margaret said softly, her aristocratic gaze running over Claire’s torn, soot-blackened combat suit, the blood crusting her cheek, and the lethal, unblinking focus in her daughter’s eyes. "My greatest investment. And my greatest disappointment."

"Stand away from the console, Margaret," Claire said, keeping the pistol leveled at her mother’s chest.

Arthur looked up from the floor, weeping openly. "Claire... please. Listen to your mother. We did this for the family name. The Montgomery legacy was crumbling... the debts, the government contracts being canceled... Arthur needed the war! We needed to control both sides!"

"Shut up, Arthur," Margaret snapped, not even looking at her husband. Her eyes remained locked on Claire. "You think you're an instrument of justice, Claire? You think that little ribbon on your chest makes you a hero? You are a killer. I saw it in you when you were seven years old. When your brother died in that pond, you didn't cry. You stood there, watching the water, cold as stone. I knew right then—you weren't meant for society. You were meant to be a weapon."

"I was a child who was terrified of a monster," Claire said, her voice steady, though her heart pounded against her ribs like a trapped beast. "You let David drown because his medical bills threatened your social standing. You forged the autopsy, and you told Arthur it was an accident."

Arthur froze. His head snapped toward his wife, his face contorting into an expression of sheer horror. "What? Margaret... what is she talking about?"

"She’s lying, Arthur," Margaret sneered, though the corner of her lips twitched with subtle, sociopathic amusement. "She’s trying to divide us. She has always hated this family."

"I found the sealed ledger in the Zurich vault, Arthur," Claire said, never taking her eyes off Margaret. "She collected a five-million-dollar trust policy the week after David was buried. She used it to buy your first defense lobbying firm. Your entire empire was built on your son's corpse, paid for by the woman standing in front of you."
