Chapter 3 - THE WOMAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCHAfter the police arrived, Diane refused to answer questions.

She claimed she needed a lawyer.

Daniel couldn't understand.

“Mom was missing from your care.”

“She wasn't missing.”

“You told us she was somewhere else.”

“I told you what you needed to hear.”

“That makes no sense.”

Diane looked at him.

“It will.”

Meanwhile, Evelyn sat in the library wrapped in a blanket.

Lily sat beside her.

“Grandma?”

“Yes?”

“Why were you scared of Aunt Diane?”

Evelyn looked toward the window.

Rain streaked the glass.

“Because your aunt has spent twenty years believing she was protecting this family.”

“From what?”

Evelyn sighed.

“From the truth.”

Lily frowned.

“What truth?”

Evelyn reached into her pocket.

She pulled out an old brass key.

“This belonged to your grandfather.”

Lily recognized it.

She had seen it in old photographs.

“What does it open?”

Evelyn looked directly at her.

“Something your aunt desperately wants destroyed.”
