Chapter 7 - WHAT DIANE DIDThey found Diane three hours later.
She was sitting alone inside an abandoned church.
Her clothes were soaked.
Her hands were shaking.
Daniel approached carefully.
“Diane.”
She looked up.
“They have Lily's name.”
Daniel's expression changed.
“Who?”
“Marcus.”
“Why?”
“Because your father wasn't the only person who knew about the money.”
Daniel stared at her.
Diane finally confessed.
Twenty years earlier, Marcus had threatened the family.
He had forged documents, manipulated accounts, and used Diane to move money.
She thought she could control him.
She couldn't.
“I kept paying him,” she whispered.
“For how long?”
“Twenty years.”
Daniel looked disgusted.
“You let Mom live in fear for twenty years.”
“I thought I was saving you.”
“You lied to everyone.”
“I know.”
“Why put Mom in the cellar?”
Diane began to cry.
“Because Marcus told me he would come for her if I didn't.”
Daniel said nothing.
