Chapter 9 - THE LEDGERThe ledger was hidden inside the conservatory wall.
Evelyn finally revealed the truth.
Her husband had documented every illegal transaction.
Every payment.
Every threat.
Every name.
The ledger could destroy Marcus.
But it could also expose Diane.
Daniel found it behind a loose brick.
Marcus watched from across the room.
“Give it to me.”
“No.”
Marcus smiled.
“Then Diane dies.”
Diane stepped forward.
“Don't.”
Marcus looked at her.
“You've spent twenty years protecting them.”
She nodded.
“I have.”
“Then finish what you started.”
Diane grabbed the ledger.
For one terrible second, Daniel thought she would surrender it.
Instead, she tore out a single page.
And swallowed it.
Marcus's smile disappeared.
“What did you do?”
Diane looked at him.
“I remembered something.”
“What?”
“That you taught me fear.”

She stepped backward.
“And I finally learned how to use it against you.”
