Chapter 15 - The Final Leverage

"Vanessa, don't do this," Marcus commanded, raising his Glock. "Put the gun down. You have nowhere to go."
"Shut up! Shut up!" Vanessa shrieked, her designer dress torn, blood dripping from her forehead where the shattered lamp had cut her. Her manicured hands were trembling violently on the grip of the revolver. "One twitch from either of you, and I splatter this little brat's brains across the wall!"
Lily was trembling so hard her teeth were chattering, her tiny arms wrapped tightly around her plush rabbit. But she didn't cry. She stared into Vanessa’s wild, bloodshot eyes with Claire’s unbroken defiance.
"Vanessa," I said, stepping forward, my voice dropping into a low, hypnotic calm. "Look at me. Look at me, not her."
Vanessa’s eyes darted to mine. "Stay back, Daniel! I swear to God I'll pull the trigger!"
"You don't want Lily," I said, holding my hands open, palms forward, taking slow, deliberate steps toward her. "Lily can't give you what you need. Lily doesn't have the offshore access keys. Claire gave them to me."
Vanessa blinked, a flicker of desperate greed breaking through her panic. "What?"
"The micro-drive inside that star pendant," I lied smoothly, pointing at the silver star in her hand. "It's encrypted with a dual-key biometric. Claire designed it so that even if you have the hardware, the files self-destruct without my retinal scan."
"She's lying! He’s lying, Vanessa!" Julian groaned from the floor, clutching his broken wrist. "Kill them both!"
"Shut up, Julian!" Vanessa screamed, her breathing ragged, her eyes darting between me and the pendant. "Daniel... if you're lying to me—"
"I’m not lying," I said, now six feet away. "Let Lily walk to Marcus. I will sit at that computer and authorize the biometric unlock. You can take the helicopter on the roof and disappear before the feds secure the elevators. It's your only way out of this room alive."
Vanessa’s chest heaved. The sound of sirens wailed from the streets below—dozens of them, converging on the hotel. The tactical radio on Marcus's vest crackled: *Federal breach team on floor fourteen, moving up.*
Time was up.
Vanessa lowered the revolver slightly, her eyes locking onto mine. "Sit at the desk, Daniel. Now."
"Let the girl go first," I insisted, my voice steady as stone.
Vanessa swallowed hard, her jaw twitching with adrenaline. She nodded toward Marcus. "Take the brat. But if you move toward that door, I shoot Daniel through the spine."
Marcus slowly stepped forward, scooping Lily into his arms. Lily reached out toward me, her eyes brimming with fresh tears.
"Daddy..." she whimpered.
"Go with Uncle Marcus, sweetheart," I whispered, smiling gently at her. "Daddy’s right behind you."
Marcus backed slowly toward the suite’s double doors, shielding Lily with his body.
The moment the door closed behind them, Vanessa's expression turned from desperate to demonic.
She leveled the revolver straight at my forehead.
"You really think I’m stupid, Daniel?" she sneered. "There is no biometric lock. Claire told me everything before she died."

She pulled the trigger.
