Chapter 29 - Into the Dragon’s Den

Two hours later, we rendezvoused with a rogue extraction team loyal to Arthur at a secluded airfield outside Innsbruck. Marcus had survived—barely. Field medics had stabilized his internal bleeding, pumping him with synthetic plasma while we transferred him to an underground medical clinic in Austria.

Before the sedation took him, Marcus caught my wrist. "Don't walk into that mountain alone, Daniel. It’s not a laboratory. It’s a fortress."

"She’s alive, Marcus," was all I said.

"If she’s alive," Marcus rasped, his eyes dark with a terrifying warning, "she won't be the woman you buried."

Leaving Marcus under heavy armed guard and placing Lily under the protection of Arthur and four former Swiss special operators in an armored bunker beneath Innsbruck, I prepared for the final descent.

I took Lily aside before I suited up. She was sitting on a folding cot, holding Barnaby. I knelt before her, taking her small hands into mine.

"I have to go get Mommy, Lily," I told her, my voice cracking despite my efforts to remain an unyielding wall.

She looked at me, not with the fear of a child, but with an ancient, terrifying understanding. She reached into her pocket and pulled out the small silver star pendant I had given her back at the bank.

She pressed it into my palm, curling my fingers over it.

"Tell Mommy I didn't lose Barnaby," she whispered. "And tell her the water wasn't cold."

I kissed her cheeks, turned on my heel, and didn't look back.

At midnight, a blacked-out Eurocopter dropped me onto the northern ridge of the Zugspitze massif, near the German-Austrian border. The winds were howling at fifty knots, driving blizzard snow across jagged limestone cliffs.

Below me, buried deep within the hollowed-out granite of the mountain, sat the Bavarian Black Site. It was disguised as an atmospheric research station, surrounded by three perimeter rings of automated sentry turrets, motion sensors, and thermal wire.

Equipped with a suppressed HK416 assault rifle, night-vision optics, and high-impact thermite breaching charges, I descended the sheer rock face like a wraith.

I cut the fiber-optic communication cables at the auxiliary generator station, plunging the outer defenses into automated reboot mode for ninety seconds. In that ninety-second window, I breached the emergency ventilation shaft, dropping twenty feet into the clinical, antiseptic white corridors of Sub-Level 4.

The smell was unmistakable: medical ozone, formalin, and blood.

The facility was in full panic. Alarm klaxons wailed in red strobe pulses. Personnel in white lab coats were shredding documents and burning hard drives, guarded by the same black-sun-patched operatives I had fought in Zurich.

I moved through them like the angel of death.

Every corner turned was a double-tap. Every doorway cleared was a silent, lethal strike. Suppressed rounds dropped guards before they could raise their carbines. I was no longer a husband; I was no longer a father. I was the weapon the United States military had forged in the darkest corners of the world, sharpened by the singular, burning drive to reclaim the woman I loved.

I reached the central laboratory—a colossal, circular amphitheater dominated by computer banks and towering glass cylinders filled with pale green fluid.

Standing in the center of the control console was a man in a pristine charcoal suit, his back turned to me, watching a digital countdown ticking toward zero on the main monitor.

*SELF-DESTRUCT INITIATED: 04:00... 03:59...*

"You are predictably efficient, Commander Mercer," the man said, not bothering to turn around.

He slowly faced me. It was Victor Vance—Marcus’s estranged brother, the phantom chairman of the Black Sun Consortium.

"Where is she, Victor?" I leveled the HK416 directly between his eyes. "Tell me, or I will peel you apart layer by layer before this mountain blows."

Victor smiled—a thin, grotesque sliver of arrogance. He raised a remote detonator in his left hand.

"Look behind the observation glass, Daniel," Victor whispered softly. "And see what your love has built."
