Chapter 6 - The Ghost in the Safehouse

Marcus’s safehouse was buried beneath an old brick textile mill in South Boston. Behind three steel blast doors and a surveillance grid, a private medical room had been set up with high-grade monitoring equipment.
Owen immediately hooked Lily up to a fresh IV drip. Her lungs were clearing rapidly, but her little body was exhausted. She lay on the cot, clutching a battered plush rabbit Marcus had found for her.
Marcus Vance stood over a bank of monitors, his gray hair cropped short, his jaw set like granite. On the screens were live security feeds from Mercer Global headquarters and Julian’s luxury penthouse on Beacon Hill.
"We have twenty-four hours before the Mercer board convenes for the emergency succession vote," Marcus said, tossing a thick dossier onto the metal table. "Vanessa filed an emergency petition with the probate court two hours ago. She declared you mentally unfit and criminally liable for Lily’s 'disappearance.'"
I stared at the paperwork. My signature had been forged at the bottom of a conservatorship surrender.
"They're moving fast," I said, my knuckles white against the edge of the table. "They know Lily is alive. They know I have Owen."
"It's worse than that," Marcus said, pulling up a financial ledger on the center screen. "Look at the transaction history for Aegis Red. That's the private defense syndicate Vanessa’s been funding. Three wire transfers of twenty-five million dollars each, approved by Julian's private key."
"What were they buying?"
"Autonomous maritime weapon systems," Marcus said grimly. "Claire's company developed the guidance algorithms before Mercer Global bought them out. Claire realized Vanessa wasn't just laundering money—she was selling military-grade naval strike tech to sanctioned foreign buyers. Claire was going to the Department of Justice."
"So they staged her death as an accident," I said, bile rising in my throat.
"And now," Marcus continued, "Vanessa and Julian are hosting the annual Mercer Foundation Gala tonight at the Boston Harbor Hotel. Three hundred dignitaries, senators, foreign buyers. They plan to announce the full sale of Mercer Logistics to Aegis Red. Once that contract is signed tonight, the assets move offshore. You will never be able to touch them."
Lily stirred on the cot. "Daddy?" she called weakly.
I walked over, kneeling beside her bed. I took her tiny hand in mine. "I'm here, baby."
"Mommy had a book," Lily whispered, her eyes fluttering with feverish exhaustion. "Under the floor... where the stars live."
I froze. "What did you say, Lily?"
"Mommy hid the red book. In the lighthouse. Where the stars live."
Marcus looked over at me, his eyes widening. "Daniel... Claire didn't keep all the backups on that drive. She left a hard copy."
Before I could reply, the security monitors flickered. A loud static hum tore through the safehouse speakers.
The perimeter motion sensors lit up in bright red across the digital map.

"We've been burned," Marcus barked, drawing a customized Glock from his holster. "Kill the lights!"
