Chapter 19 - Whispers in the Ledger

Six months later, life had settled into a quiet, beautiful rhythm.

Lily had started kindergarten in a small coastal town in Maine, far from the suffocating wealth and poisonous politics of Boston society. We lived in a modest cedar-shingled house right on the bay, where the sound of the foghorn put us to sleep every night.

On a rainy Tuesday afternoon while Lily was at school, a certified courier arrived at my front door.

He handed me a heavy, wax-sealed Manila envelope with no return address, requiring a thumbprint signature to open.

I brought the package into my study, setting it on the oak desk overlooking the pine forest.

Inside was a single handwritten letter on parchment and an antique brass key.

The handwriting made my heart stop.

It wasn't Claire's.

It was my father's. Arthur Mercer. The man who had supposedly died of a heart attack six years ago, whose death had triggered the initial restructuring of Mercer Global and set this entire chain of horrors into motion.

>*Daniel,*

>

>*If you are reading this, Julian has fallen. I always knew he lacked the steel to hold the empire, and I knew Vanessa would eventually show her true face. You were the only son who inherited your mother’s soul and my resilience.*

>

>*What Claire discovered was only the surface, Daniel. Aegis Red was never a foreign syndicate. It was created by Mercer Global thirty years ago under my direct command.*

>

>*The key enclosed opens Safety Deposit Box 804 at the Union Bank of Switzerland in Zurich. Inside, you will find the truth about why your mother really died, and why Claire had to be silenced.*

>

>*They think I am dead, Daniel. Let them keep thinking that.*

>

>*Protect the girl. The real war hasn't even begun.*

>

>*— Father.*

I stared at the parchment, my breath catching in my throat as the cold rain tapped against the windowpane.

Arthur Mercer was alive.
