Chapter 7 - The Breached Sanctum

The blast hit the outer reinforced door with the force of an artillery shell. The steel buckled inward, throwing concrete dust and shrapnel across the corridor.
"Get Lily into the panic room behind the rack!" I yelled at Owen, racking the slide of the 12-gauge.
Owen didn't hesitate. He scooped Lily into his arms, racing toward the false wall behind the server bank. Lily let out a terrified shriek as the lights shattered from a hail of automatic gunfire.
"Suppressing fire!" Marcus roared, leaning around the doorway and firing three double-taps into the dust-filled hallway.
Two men in black tactical gear and night-vision goggles moved through the breach, their submachine guns barking in rhythmic bursts. These weren't street thugs. These were Aegis Red contractors—cold, disciplined operators trained to sweep and clear.
I dropped to one knee, tracking the lead shooter through the smoke.
*BOOM.*
The shotgun blast caught the point man square in the chest plate, throwing him backward into the shattered doorframe. The second shooter pivoted, his barrel tracking toward my head, but Marcus put two rounds through his throat. The man collapsed in a choking heap.
"Move! There are more coming from the loading dock!" Marcus yelled.
We grabbed our gear, but as I turned toward the server rack, the heavy steel door of the panic room slammed shut from the inside.
*CLICK.*
The digital lock engaged. Red LED lights flared: *LOCKED - OVERRIDE REQUIRED.*
Through the reinforced observation glass, I saw Owen standing on the other side. He was holding Lily in his arms. But his face wasn't terrified anymore.
It was cold. Resigned.
"Owen!" I slammed my fist against the bulletproof glass. "Open the door!"
Owen shook his head, tears streaming down his face, but his jaw remained locked. He raised a two-way radio to the glass.
His voice crackled over the intercom system.
"I'm sorry, Daniel. I really am."
"Owen, what are you doing?! Open the damn door!"
"They found Chloe," Owen wept over the radio. "Julian called me ten minutes ago on my private burner. He sent me a live video of Chloe tied to a chair in a warehouse in Chelsea. He told me if I didn't lock you out and deliver Lily to the Boston Harbor Hotel by midnight... they would send her to me in pieces."
"Owen, don't do this!" I screamed, ramming my shoulder into the steel frame. "They'll kill Chloe anyway! They don't leave witnesses!"
"I have to take the chance, Daniel!" Owen sobbed. "A father has to protect his daughter!"
He turned and carried Lily toward the secondary escape tunnel built into the rear of the vault—an old maintenance tunnel that led directly out to the Boston storm drains.
"Daddy!" Lily’s scream echoed faintly through the reinforced glass as Owen carried her away into the dark.
"NO!" I roared, leveling the shotgun at the electronic keypad and firing two point-blank slugs. Sparks exploded, but the magnetic deadbolts remained welded shut.
"Daniel, stop!" Marcus grabbed my shoulder, hauling me back. "The door is four-inch hardened titanium. You can't shoot through it! We have to take the street route and intercept them before they hit the hotel!"
Another grenade exploded in the outer corridor. Concrete rained down on us.

"We move now," Marcus hissed, his eyes blazing, "or we lose her forever."
