Chapter 8 - The Lighthouse Secret

We fought our way out through the textile mill’s drainage pipe, emerging into the freezing drizzle of a deserted alley. Marcus had an unmarked black SUV stashed two blocks away. We tore through the slick streets of Boston, tires screaming against the asphalt.
"The gala starts in three hours," Marcus said, his hands tight on the steering wheel, his tactical headset humming with intercepted police radio chatter. "Julian and Vanessa have locked down the entire top three floors of the Boston Harbor Hotel. Aegis Red has thirty armed mercenaries running private security. Local police have been told it's a high-profile diplomatic gathering."
"Owen won't make it to the hotel on foot," I said, reloading my sidearm with trembling, furious hands. "He’ll use the transit tunnels. That brings him out near the waterfront by Rowes Wharf."
"Daniel, listen to me," Marcus said, glancing sideways at me. "Before she was taken, Lily said something. *Where the stars live.* She wasn't talking about the safehouse. She was talking about the Mercer Island lighthouse."
I closed my eyes for a fraction of a second, the memories hitting me like physical blows. Claire used to spend hours at the top of that Victorian lighthouse, painting the constellations on the curved ceiling for Lily. She used to tell Lily, *No matter how dark the ocean gets, the stars will always lead you home.*
"The floorboards," I muttered, my heart hammering. "Under the observation deck. Claire had a hidden compartment where she kept her architectural schematics."
"If Claire’s original hard copy of the Aegis Red contracts is there," Marcus said, "we don't just stop Julian and Vanessa tonight. We obliterate them legally, federally, and publicly. We strip them of every asset before they can leave US waters."
"Mercer Island is crawling with Vanessa's men," I replied. "Going back there is suicide."
"Then we divide," Marcus said firmly. "I will track Owen and Lily through the storm drain exits at Rowes Wharf. I have thermal drones scanning the grid right now. You take my high-speed pursuit boat from the Navy Yard, slip into Mercer Island, and pull that hard copy from the lighthouse."
I looked at Marcus. He was my mentor. The man who had pulled me out of three combat zones in the Middle East.
"You swear to me, Marcus," I said, grabbing his forearm, my voice breaking with raw desperation. "You pull Lily out alive."
"On my mother’s grave, Daniel. I won't let them touch her."
Marcus slammed the brakes at the Navy Yard pier. A high-powered black military Zodiac was tied to the slip, its engine primed and muffled.
I grabbed a tactical vest, three extra magazines, and stepped onto the boat. "See you at the hotel, Marcus."
"Daniel, wait," Marcus called out from the dock.
I turned back.
Marcus looked at me under the flickering amber streetlamp, an unreadable shadow crossing his face. "Whatever you find in that lighthouse... remember who your friends are."
Before I could ask what he meant, he hit the gas on the SUV and vanished into the rain.

I turned the Zodiac's throttle and shot out into the harbor, cutting through the freezing black waves toward the island where my nightmare began.
