Chapter 20 - The Horizon Ahead

I picked up the heavy brass key.

It was cold, bearing the engraved seal of the Swiss banking house and the Mercer family crest: *A hawk clutching an anchor.*

My mind raced through the past six years. My father’s sudden closed-casket funeral. The rapid corporate restructuring. The mysterious foreign contracts that Julian had supposedly initiated, but which had now been revealed as part of a decades-old covert legacy.

Claire hadn't just uncovered a rogue corporate deal.

She had stumbled into my father's shadow empire.

A knock sounded at the front door, breaking the deafening silence of the study.

I moved silently to the front hallway, my hand resting naturally on the grip of the sidearm concealed inside my waistband.

I pulled the curtain aside.

Standing on the porch in a yellow raincoat was Marcus Vance. Behind him, holding an umbrella, was Lily, giggling as she jumped in a puddle on the walkway.

"Daddy!" Lily squealed, running through the door the moment I unlocked it, hugging my knees with her wet raincoat. "Uncle Marcus picked me up from school! We got hot chocolate!"

I scooped her up into my arms, kissing her damp cheek. "Did you now? Did you share any with Barnaby?"

"Barnaby doesn't like chocolate, silly!" she giggled, squirming to be put down so she could take off her rain boots.

Marcus stepped inside, closing the heavy oak door behind him. He took off his drenched cap, his gray eyes instantly locking onto the open Manila envelope on my desk in the study.

He didn't ask what was inside.

He just looked at me, a grave, knowing shadow crossing his weathered face.

"He sent the key, didn't he?" Marcus said quietly.

I stared at my former commanding officer. The man who had helped me take down Vanessa and Julian. The man who had sworn an oath to my family.

"You knew," I whispered.

"I knew your father wouldn't stay buried forever, Daniel," Marcus replied, his voice dropping into that razor-sharp tactical register I knew all too well. "He’s in Zurich. And the people who tried to kill Claire... the real architects behind Aegis Red... they just found out you have the key."

Lily ran into the kitchen, humming a song Claire used to sing to her, completely oblivious to the storm gathering once again on our horizon.

I looked down at the brass key in my hand, then out the window at the Atlantic Ocean churning beneath the rain.

I had saved my daughter from the monsters in the dark once.

I looked at Marcus, my jaw hardening into granite, my eyes turning to pure steel.

"Pack the bags, Marcus," I said, sliding the brass key into my pocket beside Claire's silver star. "We’re going to Switzerland."
