Chapter 30 - The Living Dead

I kept my rifle trained on Victor’s skull as my peripheral vision shifted toward the massive, soundproof glass chamber behind the central console.

The chamber was bathed in soft, clinical blue light. Thick bundles of intravenous cables, biometric monitors, and neural-mapping wires snaked from the ceiling down into a reinforced medical pod in the center of the room.

Inside the pod lay Claire.

My heart stopped. The breath tore from my lungs as if I had been punched in the chest by a freight train.

She looked exactly as she had the day she vanished. Not a wrinkle, not an imperfection, not a single mark of aging. Her auburn hair fell across her shoulders like dark silk. The steady, rhythmic green line of a heart monitor beeped on the console beside her: *60 BPM. Stable.*

"Claire..." The name tore out of my throat, raw and broken.

"She is a masterpiece, isn't she?" Victor Vance purred, his fingers hovering over the detonator. "When Julian pushed her down the stairs three years ago, her brain suffered catastrophic trauma. She died, Daniel. Technically. Clinically. She was gone."

"You're lying!" I snarled, my finger tightening on the trigger until the safety catch groaned under the pressure.

"The Lazarus Serum doesn't just heal tissue, Daniel—it rewrites it," Victor continued, stepping slowly toward the glass. "We preserved her cellular structure. We reconstructed her synaptic pathways. But we couldn't wake her. The neural architecture was locked behind an encrypted biological firewall. We needed the original key—the specific mitochondrial sequence Claire created before her accident."

Victor’s eyes widened with manic, triumphant madness.

"And you brought it directly to us. In Zurich. When you sampled Lily's DNA to open Vault 884, the bank's automated biometric uplink transmitted the sequence straight to this terminal. You unlocked her, Daniel. You brought your wife back from the dead."

As if responding to his words, the pneumatic seals of the medical pod hissed open.

A cloud of cold vapor spilled across the chamber floor.

The woman inside the pod stirred. Her chest rose in a deep, sharp inhalation.

Her eyelids fluttered open.

Her eyes were not the warm, hazel eyes I had fallen in love with. They were a brilliant, glowing, iridescent violet—the unmistakable sign of deep-level genetic reconstruction.

She sat up smoothly, her movements possessing the exact same unnatural, terrifying fluidity as the super-soldiers who had tried to slaughter us at Lake Lucerne.

She turned her head toward the glass. Her violet eyes locked directly onto mine.

"Daniel?" she whispered through the intercom, her voice sending an electric shock through every nerve in my body. It was her voice. Claire's voice. The voice that had sung Lily to sleep.

"Claire!" I yelled, stepping toward the glass, lowering the rifle in pure, disbelieving desperation. "Claire, it’s me! I've got you! I have Lily!"

Victor Vance let out a sharp, mocking laugh that echoed off the cold steel walls.

"She remembers your name, Daniel," Victor sneered, his thumb pressing the primary trigger on the remote. "Too bad she doesn't remember that she was never your wife. Claire was our operative from the very beginning. She didn't marry you out of love. She married you because the Mercer bloodline was the only incubator compatible with the Lazarus gene."

The reinforced blast doors behind me slammed shut with the deafening weight of ten tons of solid steel, locking me inside the chamber.

On the console, the self-destruct sequence flashed violently into its final countdown:

*00:59... 00:58... 00:57...*

Claire stepped out of the pod. She picked up a heavy titanium scalpel from the surgical tray beside her, her face completely expressionless, devoid of any warmth, any mercy, any humanity.

She looked at me through the glass, her lips parting as she tilted her head like a predator sizing up its prey.

"Target identified," the woman who looked like my wife said in a cold, hollow monotone. "Eliminate Daniel Mercer."

The observation glass shattered inward.
