Chapter 14 - REVENGE
Brenda's motive wasn't only money.
It was punishment.
She believed I had destroyed Thomas.
In reality, Thomas destroyed himself.
But grief had turned into obsession.
She wanted my money.
My daughter's security.
My grandson's future.
But more than that, she wanted me to watch my family collapse.
Then authorities found Brenda's vehicle near the Mexican border.
Empty.
On the passenger seat was an old photograph.
Me holding newborn Gaby.
Across the front someone had written:
THIS WAS NEVER ABOUT THE MONEY.
That same night, Brenda called my daughter.
Her voice was calm.
“You've caused enough trouble.”
Gaby replied:
“You caused it.”
No fear.
No apology.
Brenda demanded a meeting.
Gaby refused.
Then Brenda said:
“I have something your dead mother wanted Robert to see.”
Gaby looked at me.
