The altered will made the motive clearer.
Gaby had been targeted because she was my daughter.
Not merely because she owned property.
My estate would eventually pass to her.
And after her, Leo.
Rebecca uncovered a network of trusts and companies designed to move assets if Gaby were declared incompetent.
Everything depended on one thing.
Convincing a court she couldn't manage her life.
Suddenly the fake psychiatric report made sense.
The recordings.
The custody threats.
The homelessness.
Even the isolation.
They weren't destroying Gaby randomly.
They were creating a version of her that a judge might believe.
Then Brenda went public.
Outside a courthouse, surrounded by cameras, she cried while talking about her grandson.
“We only want Leo safe.”
She described Gaby as deeply troubled.
Unpredictable.
Possibly dangerous.
Gaby watched ten seconds before switching off the television.
The phone rang.
Rebecca answered.
Her face hardened.
“What?”
I asked.

“Derek filed for emergency custody.”
The hearing was scheduled for the next morning.
