Chapter 16 - GABY TAKES THE STAND

Months passed.

The criminal case became enormous.

Forgery.

Fraud.

Identity theft.

Witness intimidation.

Conspiracy.

Multiple victims.

Gaby testified for nearly four hours.

The defense tried to make her look confused.

She wasn't.

They asked about sleeping at the bus station.

She answered.

They showed photographs of her begging.

She answered.

Then one attorney asked:

“Were you mentally unstable?”

Gaby looked at the jury.

“I was terrified.”

She paused.

“There's a difference.”

The courtroom went silent.

When she described seeing my car on Grand Avenue, her voice finally broke.

“I thought my father would be ashamed of me.”

She looked at me.

May you like

“He wasn't.”

That was the only moment I had to look down.
