Chapter 7 - UNIT 318

The storage unit contained boxes.

Dozens of them.

Inside were property deeds.

Notary stamps.

Copies of passports.

Bank documents.

Old phones.

Hard drives.

Records connected to at least nine families.

Gaby wasn't the first person the Millers had targeted.

Then investigators found the ledger.

Page seventeen contained the $927,000 transfer.

The money came from properties belonging to an elderly widow named Margaret Ellis.

She had died months earlier.

On paper, Gaby received almost a million dollars from the sale.

In reality, the money passed through the account for less than a day.

Then it moved into a company controlled by Derek.

Rebecca finally understood the structure.

“They needed a person to sit in the middle.”

“A scapegoat,” I said.

She nodded.

If the fraud was discovered, the largest transfer would lead to Gaby.

A supposedly unstable woman.

Homeless.

Missing.

Running with a child.

It was almost perfect.

Then an investigator opened a metal lockbox.

Inside was a copy of my will.

Except I had never signed this version.

My signature had been forged.

And according to the document, the person who would eventually control my estate had ties to Brenda Miller.
