The jury returned guilty verdict after guilty verdict.
Mason had already taken a plea deal.
Derek eventually cooperated.
Brenda fought until the end.
She was convicted on multiple counts.
When officers led her away, she finally looked at Gaby.
Gaby didn't look back.
That mattered.
Months earlier, Brenda could control my daughter's breathing with one phone call.
Now she couldn't even make Gaby turn her head.
The townhouse returned to Gaby.
So did much of her savings.
Her truck was recovered.
She sold it.
Then she sold the townhouse too.
I asked whether leaving felt like Brenda had won.
Gaby smiled.
“No.”
“Why?”
