Chapter 10 - The Tape in the Safe

"Rosie?" Evelyn gasped, taking a stumbling step toward the stairs, her hands flying to her throat. "Sweetheart, what are you doing here? How long have you been listening?"

"Long enough," Rosie choked out. She descended the stairs like a ghost, her designer shoes gone, her bare feet padding softly against the hardwood. She was trembling so violently she could barely hold her phone. "Dad... Dad had a treatment fund? In Switzerland?"

"Rosie, listen to me," Evelyn stammered, her voice suddenly frantic, losing all of its imperious matriarchal power. "You don't understand the financial pressure we were under. Julian explained it to me! If we had liquidated that money for medical bills, the estate would have gone into probate bankruptcy! We would have lost the house! We would have lost everything!"

"You let him die," Rosie whispered. The realization didn't hit her with anger; it hit her with total, hollow devastation. "You and Julian. You let Dad die so Julian could buy into Apex... so you could keep your country club membership."

"I did it for you!" Evelyn shrieked, lunging forward to grab Rosie’s arm, but Rosie violently ripped herself away, stumbling back against the wall.

"Don't touch me!" Rosie screamed. "Don't you dare touch me! You lied to me for four years! You told me Clara abandoned him! You told me Clara refused to pay for his hospice! You made me hate her!"

"She *is* garbage!" Evelyn yelled, completely dropping the mask now, her voice echoing off the high ceilings like a screeching bird. "Look at her! She turned on us the second she got power! She is a cold, calculating snake who wants to see us in the gutter!"

"No, Evelyn," I said, stepping between them with absolute, immovable calm. "The only people heading for the gutter are the ones who committed federal crimes to put themselves on pedestals."

I pulled a small silver USB drive from my pocket and held it up between my fingers.

"What is that?" Evelyn demanded, her eyes darting to it with immediate dread.

"Before Dad passed away," I said, looking directly into my mother's terrified eyes, "he wasn't as delirious as you thought. He called his old corporate attorney, Robert Keller. He had Keller set up an encrypted escrow box at JPMorgan. The key was delivered to me on the anniversary of his death."

Evelyn’s breath hitched. "Keller died two years ago..."

"His records didn't," I replied. "On this drive is an audio recording of Dad’s last lucid conversation with Keller. Along with the original, unamended copy of his last will and testament. The one Julian and you replaced with the fraudulent probate filing."

Rosie’s head snapped toward me. "A fraudulent will?"

"Dad didn't leave the family assets to Evelyn," I said, every word hitting like a sledgehammer. "He left sixty percent of the estate to me in an irrevocable trust, thirty percent to Rosie with a mandatory spendthrift clause to keep Julian’s hands off it, and the bare legal minimum to Evelyn."

Rosie slid down the wall until she hit the floor, burying her face in her hands and sobbing hysterically.

Evelyn stood frozen, the veins standing out in her throat like taut cords. "You... you can't prove that will is authentic."

"The original notarized document is sitting in the vault at JPMorgan Chase on 42nd Street, Evelyn," I whispered. "And the United States Attorney’s Office already has a subpoena for it."

Before Evelyn could utter another syllable, my front door flew open with a violent bang.

Julian stood in the entryway, drenched in rain, his eyes wild, hair plastered to his forehead, clutching an iron tire iron from his trunk.
