Chapter 17 - Evelyn's Collapse

Flashing red and blue lights painted the rain-slicked walls of my kitchen through the shattered terrace door.

Two officers entered with their guns drawn, followed closely by Detective Marcus.

"Ms. Hayes, are you unharmed?" Marcus asked, his eyes sweeping from me to Evelyn, who was still leaning against the island, trembling like a wet dog.

"I’m fine, Detective," I said calmly. "My mother was just attempting to execute an illegal search and seizure without a warrant. And she brought a deadly weapon."

Marcus walked over to Evelyn, pulling a pair of stainless steel handcuffs from his belt. "Evelyn Hayes, you are under arrest for felony burglary, criminal trespass, and assault with a deadly weapon."

"Do you know who I am?" Evelyn hissed, trying to pull her arms away, but Marcus snapped the metal cuffs around her wrists with effortless precision. "I am Samuel Hayes’s widow! My daughter is setting me up! She’s an extortionist! Clara, tell them! Tell them this was a family argument!"

I turned my back on her, pouring a glass of water from the tap. "Take her away, Marcus."

"Clara! Clara, you ungrateful wretch!" Evelyn shrieked, thrashing against Marcus’s grip as he marched her out toward the squad cars. "I gave you life! You owe me everything! You will rot in hell for this!"

Her screams faded down the front steps, drowned out by the thrum of the heavy rain and the slamming of the cruiser doors.

Twenty minutes later, the house was quiet again.

I sat on the edge of the kitchen counter, sipping my water, listening to the rain tap against the glass.

My phone vibrated on the table. It was Sarah Lin.

"Clara?"

"Did the airport team confirm it?" I asked immediately.

"Confirmed," Sarah said, her voice tight with tension. "Julian Vance managed to post a half-million-dollar cash bond through a predatory bail bondsman thirty minutes ago. He didn't return to the Hamptons. He just checked into a private terminal at JFK under an alias. He has a chartered Gulfstream fueled on the tarmac, destination Panama City."

I set my glass down. "Does he have the offshore bearer bonds with him?"

"Our sources in his former office say he cleared out his personal safety deposit box before the freeze orders were finalized," Sarah answered. "Approximately six million in untraceable bearer bonds."

I stood up, walking toward my study. "He’s not leaving the country, Sarah. Call Homeland Security. Give them the tail number on that jet."
